This job posting is for a Fishery Biologist 1/2 (Area Management Biologist) with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Sport Fish, located in Haines, Alaska. This position supports management of sport fisheries within the Haines/Skagway area, with duties including field monitoring, public engagement, and collaboration with fishery managers and researchers.
What You Will Be Doing- Monitor fisheries in season and issue emergency orders to achieve sport fishing management objectives.
- Assist the public at the Haines area office; coordinate with user groups, fishery managers, and research biologists to develop fishery management plans, regulatory proposals, and recommendations for the Alaska Board of Fisheries.
- Plan and supervise fisheries research projects.
- Review and comment on a variety of land use activities to ensure sustainable fisheries.

The area management biologist position offers a high degree of autonomy and the opportunity to shape fisheries management within the management area. Duties involve field and office work and collaborating with a professional Southeast Alaska team including research and biometric staff, an enhancement and access coordinator, and administrative support.
Working ConditionsThe management area includes Skagway and Haines and extends to the US/Canada border. The sport fisheries are diverse, including alpine trout lakes, mainland rivers, marine salmon, groundfish, and shellfish. The position will be stationed in Haines. The role may require travel to Board of Fisheries meetings and remote field camps for up to two weeks at a time.
Qualifications — Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities- Knowledge and experience with salmon, groundfish, and resident species management for recreational fisheries.
- Ability to communicate complex technical and regulatory information clearly, both orally and in writing, to diverse audiences.
- Knowledge and experience with the Alaska Board of Fisheries process, including area Fish and Game Advisory Committees and regulation development.
- Experience conducting fisheries research and presenting findings in technical and management reports.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with department staff, local organizations, federal and state agencies, and the public.
Special notes: A valid driver’s license is required. Some positions may involve possession of firearms or ammunition. First Aid/CPR training will be provided if not already certified.
Minimum QualificationsFishery Biologist 1: A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college in biology, a related branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, fisheries science, or natural resource management. Substitutions may apply as described in the original posting (e.g., credit hours in related fields and upper-division courses).
Fishery Biologist 2: A bachelor’s degree in a related field plus one year of professional biologist experience, or a master’s degree that substitutes for the required experience. Special notes on “upper division courses” and related substitutions are included in the original posting.
