Job Description
Fishery Biologist 4 (PCN 115139) – Juneau, AK
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries, is recruiting a Fishery Biologist 4 to oversee several salmon research projects in Southeast Alaska. The main duties of this dynamic position include supervising four stock assessment biologists conducting field work, data analysis, and reporting on salmon stocks in diverse Southeast Alaska areas; assisting in project planning and budgetary exercises;
leading technical analyses and biometric reviews; and serving as a regional editor of publications generated by projects under this position’s oversight.
The successful candidate will participate in Pacific Salmon Commission technical committees, attend Alaska Board of Fisheries regulatory meetings, and communicate stock assessment information regularly to stakeholders and the public.
Responsibilities- Supervise and mentor four stock assessment biologists in field work, data analysis, and reporting.
- Assist in project planning and budgetary exercises for salmon research projects.
- Lead technical analyses and biometric reviews related to salmon stocks.
- Serve as a regional editor of publications generated by projects under oversight.
- Participate in Pacific Salmon Commission technical committees and Alaska Board of Fisheries meetings.
- Communicate stock assessment information regularly to stakeholders and the public.
- Bachelor’s degree in biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, fisheries science, natural resource management, or a related field.
- One year of advanced professional experience as a biologist or fish culturist (e.g., Fishery Biologist 3, Fish Culturist 3, Wildlife Biologist 3, Habitat Biologist 3, or Fisheries Geneticist 2 with the State of Alaska or equivalent).
- Substitution:
Bachelor’s degree supplemented with required credit hours in biology and related sciences as specified in the job posting.
- Analysis and Assessment:
Proficient in collecting, analyzing, maintaining, and disseminating data. - Biology:
Knowledge of environmental, plant, and animal living tissues and their interactions. - Oral and Written Communication:
Ability to present information effectively to diverse audiences. - Scientific Research:
Knowledge of environmental, ecological, biological, or physical science principles and methods. - Technical Competence:
Ability to evaluate technical information related to the job. - Project Management:
Ability to plan, supervise, manage, and report on large and complex research projects.
