Position

We are recruiting for a Fish and Wildlife Technician 3/4 located in Douglas, Alaska.

What you will be doing

Under the general supervision of a Fisheries Biologist 1 and with oversight by staff biologists at the regional office, the incumbent will serve at the Canyon Island Fish Wheel Camp on the Taku River as the on-site manager of the large, remote, and permanent salmon stock assessment field camp. The incumbent will assist in the capture, tagging, biological sampling, and release of salmon for the marking portion of a mark–recapture project to help determine in‑season and post‑season abundance of Taku River Chinook, sockeye, and coho salmon stocks.

Additional duties include sampling with gillnets, routine camp duties, basic construction and carpentry, procurement of project supplies, providing logistical support for camp, planning crew schedules, and overseeing general maintenance of all camp facilities and equipment. This position works with a large degree of autonomy and discretion in day‑to‑day activities and requires a high level of flexibility to adjust to changing priorities and conditions to meet project goals and objectives.

This will require the ability to effectively communicate with crew members and project leads.

This position is flexibly staffed. The level of the job offer will be based on the selected candidate’s qualifications. If hired at the lower level, you will be promoted to the higher level after completing the training plan and demonstrating competency in the work.

This position provides on‑river leadership experience by being part of a highly motivated crew of technicians to the benefit of a sustainably managed transboundary fisheries by overseeing tagging operations by project staff, collection of catch and performance data, daily river boat operations, and biological sampling of all five pacific salmon species, and maintenance of a remote field camp.

working conditions you can expect

The position is stationed at the Douglas, Alaska ADF&G Region 1 office; however, work will primarily be conducted at the remote Canyon Island fish wheel camp on the Taku River from roughly mid‑April through mid‑October each season. This position’s duties require the incumbent to work from camp on the river for the duration of the field season where housing and food will be provided.

A few breaks off the river throughout the season are encouraged and will be accommodated as much as possible. The incumbent will be expected to provide their own food, housing, and transportation while working in town.
