The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries is recruiting
for a Fishery Biologist 1 (Tagging Crew Lead) located in Fairbanks, Alaska!
What You Will Be Doing:Under the general supervision of a Fishery Biologist 2, this position will play a crew lead role with tagging studies in the Yukon River Area and may assist with other research projects as needed. These projects use a variety of fish capture methods and the incumbent will be involved with operational planning, crew training, fieldwork, logistics, and the installation and removal of telemetry monitoring infrastructure.
In addition, this position involves data entry, QA/QC, potentially report writing, and report editing as requested for Yukon River Area research projects. The incumbent should be comfortable traveling by skiff and small aircraft.

Benefits Of Joining Our Team:This unique position is an integral part of the Yukon River salmon research team. The incumbent will use safe handling methods for the capture, sampling, tagging, and live release of adult salmon. Data collected during sampling will be maintained in a digital database with catch and tagging numbers reported to the Project Leader and associated research staff daily. Work will occur with other Department staff and alongside non-governmental organization partners in the study.
Additional opportunities may arise in the areas of aerial tracking surveys, visiting remote locations to install tracking equipment, and depending on the skills of the incumbent; report writing, and data analysis.
With a Fairbanks duty station, the incumbent will start in spring preparing for fieldwork in the office and adjacent storage facilities, will assist Project Leader and the lead Fish and Wildlife Technician in equipment preparation, procurement, and logistical planning. There is an expectation that the incumbent will travel to conduct fieldwork in locations throughout the Yukon River drainage, but will primarily be stationed at the upper Yukon River field site for much of June and July.
During the field season, the incumbent will be located at a field camp which requires tent camping with food purchased for the project by the state. The incumbent will work with other crew members to capture, tag, and life release adult salmon using a variety of equipment and approved methodologies. After the field season, the incumbent will travel back to Fairbanks and will once again be based out of the Fairbanks office during field equipment storage, and post-season QA/QC data checks.
During this post-field season timeline, there may be opportunities to assist with remote tracking tower infrastructure work, aerial surveys, and assisting adjacent programs with field work.
- This position will require living and working out of a remote field camp located off of the road system for an extended period of time.
We are looking for an individual with the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- Experience in safe capture, radio tagging, and live release of adult salmonids.
- Experience completing time sensitive data-entry, QA/QC, and summarization of results in a consistent and accurate manner. Specifically, experience producing reports and technical information materials using Microsoft Office products (including Excel, Word, and Outlook); proofreading technical documents; and report writing.
- Experience conducting work in remote parts of Alaska including field operations, field logistics, and training and/or supervision of employees in fishery sampling techniques, species , and data collection.
- Experience in effective communication with crews collecting data in the field, and relaying information to a diverse audience including members of the public, as well as State, Federal, and Non-Governmental agencies.
- Experience working with databases and associated programs such as Microsoft Excel & Access and within the R coding language.
