The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries is recruiting

for a Fishery Biologist 4 located in Juneau, Alaska!

What you will be doing:

The Department of Fish and Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries is seeking Fisheries Biologist 4 to oversee several salmon research projects in Southeast Alaska. The main duties of this interesting and dynamic position are to supervise four stock assessment biologists conducting field work, data analysis and reporting on salmon stocks in diverse Southeast Alaska areas, also assisting in project planning and budgetary exercises, leading technical analyses, and biometric reviews.

The successful candidate will work with colleagues in commensurate roles to develop escapement goals and will serve as a regional editor of publications generated by projects under this positions oversight.

The successful candidate will participate in one or more Pacific Salmon Commission technical committees, the Alaska Board of Fisheries regulatory meetings, and will communicate stock assessment information regularly to stakeholders and the public.

working conditions you can expect:

The job is based in the Region 1 ADF&G office in Douglas, Alaska in a professional office setting that is open to the public. The daily work environment will include office‑based computer work, with opportunities to work in the field. Periodic travel away from Douglas/Juneau is required to attend Pacific Salmon Commission (PSC) meetings (6‑8 weeks annually), other professional meetings such as the Alaska Board of Fisheries, and to participate in remote field work.

This is a dynamic position that involves regular interactions with division scientists, biometricians, as well as ADF&G staff from other divisions, and provides potential for collaborations with university, federal, and international researchers. This position occasionally requires time working outside normal business hours and on weekends for meetings and work sessions. We offer flexibility with work schedules and options for hybrid telework.

  • Requires reasonably frequent travel in/out of state.
  • Requires a valid passport and the ability to enter Canada.
  • This position may require travel in small planes, watercraft, working in inclement weather, or at sea.
