The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Wildlife Conservation is recruiting a Wildlife Biologist III located in Douglas, Alaska.

The department is seeking an individual to assist with monitoring and conservation research of marine mammal species within areas including Southeast Alaska, Gulf of Alaska, and Bering Sea. The position will design, plan, and perform scientific research for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game Gulf and Bering Marine Mammal Program.

The mission of the Marine Mammal Program is advancing science to promote the sound management of marine mammals for the people of Alaska.

This position offers an opportunity to be part of a team to conduct research on a diverse array of marine mammal projects in beautiful and remote areas of Alaska.

This position will be based in Douglas at the Region 1 office. Individual desk space in an open cubicle office will be provided. Daily work will primarily entail working on research projects and logistics with program staff and program lead.

• For field work, this position requires the use or possession of a firearm or ammunition (training available after selection).
• For field work, working in dynamic environmental conditions, in a small plane, and/or aboard a skiff or other small vessel.
• First Aid/CPR training is required but can be obtained after selection.

The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic, thoughtful, and self‑motivated biologist able to ask insightful questions, creatively solve problems, supervise field teams, and work independently and as part of a group. The incumbent must be physically able to work in the out‑of‑doors in harsh weather, experience leading field research teams, and experience developing and implementing research projects. The incumbent must be able to share information and promote the Marine Mammal Program through outreach efforts with partners, conservation groups, policy makers, scientists, and the public.

• Research Experience – Experience as a wildlife biologist performing field work studies on marine mammals. Desired experience in ecology, population monitoring, and/or cetacean biology.
• Research Project Development and Management – Experience developing research projects, experimental design, obtaining competitive funding, and leading projects for species with conservation need. Desired experience includes identifying potential projects, defining project objectives, research planning and review, budget preparation and management, leadership of field teams, statistical analysis, data management, data archiving, and metadata.
• Regulatory Experience – Knowledge and experience with marine mammal regulations. Specifically describe work experience pertinent to marine mammal permits, the MMPA, and ESA listed species.
• Staff Management – Experience with supervision of field teams and other professional staff.
• Writing – Strong written and verbal communication skills, including any experience publishing manuscripts in peer‑reviewed scientific journals, presenting research results at scientific conferences, writing reports and documents, and explaining research and management on controversial wildlife management topics and studies.

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management; AND one year of full‑performance professional level biologist experience. The required professional biologist work experience is met by service as a Fishery Biologist II, Wildlife Biologist II, Habitat Biologist II, or Fisheries Geneticist I with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.
