Eligibility (ANILCA)Candidate must have lived or worked in or near the Tongass National Forest boundaries and possess special knowledge or expertise regarding the natural and cultural resources of Southeast Alaska.
Duties- This position is established to perform routine and complex tasks related to natural resources management programs.
- The unit’s programs include timber/silviculture, recreation, wildlife, fisheries, watershed, range and vegetation management.
- Accomplish assignments that support field projects and program planning activities for the unit.
- Prepare, develop, and execute timber cruises and sample surveys for resource information and estimate quality and quantity of timber for appraisal, sales administration, management planning, and logging plans.
- Lay out sales in accordance with EAR and other instructions, considering variables such as accessibility, steep slopes, stream protection, nesting tree protection, wildlife impacts, fuels management and regeneration requirements.
- Lay out the boundary of areas designated for planting, site preparation, and timber stand improvement contracts; check planted areas for seedling survival rate and stocking and record information.
- Gather, compile, and recommend improvements for developed and dispersed recreation sites on the unit; recruit and train volunteers.
- Serve as inspector and contracting officer’s representative on service contracts to ensure work is completed properly.
- Inspect recreation areas, areas of concentrated public use, and special use permits for compliance with permit and management plans, public health regulations, and safety plans.
- Function as Collection Officer for recreation sites: collect fees, count, reconcile money collected, and ensure deposits are made appropriately.
- Assist with putting together project proposals and conducting studies for National Environmental Protection Act (NEPA) project analysis; collect, compile, and summarize recreation data as required for data systems.
- Monitor and lead crews maintaining existing trails, facilities, etc. to ensure they are in operable condition.
- Conduct field studies of sensitive wildlife and fish species to determine numbers, environmental conditions, and the condition of the species and its habitat, and factors affecting health and welfare.
- Conduct water resource inventories, implement water resource improvement project plans, and evaluate impacts of Forest management on aquatic resources; collect field data on streams and lakes for survey reports.
- Participate in development of plans and programs for range management by collecting data for grazing allotment plans and advising management on needed improvements and practices.
- Participate in noxious plant control, seeding, or similar projects by flagging boundaries, operating equipment, and carrying out studies.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
