Position: WILDLAND FIRE & RESOURCE TECH 1-2-3 FLEX / PREVENTION OFFICER (PCN 10-9526)

Overview

The Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forestry & Fire Protection, is recruiting for a Wildland Fire & Resource Technician 1/2/3 Flex in Palmer, Alaska. This position is open to all applicants.

What You Will Be Doing
  • Initial Attack Firefighting:
    Use knowledge of wildland fire strategies and tactics to suppress fires. Be proficient as a firefighter and able to lead or fill in as necessary on an emerging incident.
  • Operational Preparedness and Training:
    Ensure readiness for fire response in body, mind, and equipment. Continue learning and honing skills. Help facilitate training for state, cooperator, and emergency fire personnel.
  • Fire Prevention and Investigation:
    Participate in prescribed burns and fuels treatment projects. Secure fire origins and contribute to fire investigations for potential civil or criminal cases.
  • Enforcement and Compliance:
    Issue warnings and citations in accordance with regulations. Conduct field inspections to ensure compliance with Alaska burn permits and recommend safety measures.
  • Public Education and Outreach:
    Assist with community outreach initiatives to educate the public on fire safety and risk reduction. Be aware of current fire conditions and be able to express them.

Working Environment

This position is based out of the Mat-Su Area Office at 101 Airport Road, Palmer, Alaska. Duties require considerable physical exertion, outdoor work in all terrain and weather, long hours, and extended periods away from home. Capabilities include carrying 45 pounds, running, bending, twisting, walking, and climbing. A Work Capacity Test (pack test) at the arduous level is administered as part of the selection process.

Salary Tiers
  • Wildland Fire & Resource Technician 1 – starting salary $24.21 per hour.
  • Wildland Fire & Resource Technician 2 – starting salary $27.25 per hour. Six months of trainee or entry-level wildland firefighting or forestry field experience required. Red Card qualification under the National Incident Qualification System (NQS) required.
  • Wildland Fire & Resource Technician 3 – starting salary $30.80 per hour. Twelve months of wildland firefighting or forestry field experience, with at least six months at the developmental level, required. Red Card qualification under NQS required.

Education substitution applies to Technician 2 and 3 for college coursework in forestry, fire science, or related fields, as described in the original posting. No substitution for six months of developmental experience or for NQS qualifications.

Special Notes
  • Applicants must be at least eighteen years of age.
  • Most positions require NQS certifications; recruitment may select from candidates who meet listed experience and training requirements. Specialty areas include fire operations, wildland fire prevention, and aviation support.
  • Work Capacity Test at the arduous level is required (3-mile hike with a 45-pound pack in 45 minutes or less).
