Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Publications & Communications Director this position is responsible for SHI’s media coverage including writing and editing press releases; managing SHI’s social media accounts; preparing, deploying, and optimizing email campaigns; and ensuring brand consistency and accuracy. The Communications Specialist will work to advance SHI’s visibility and reputation by developing and executing strategic, creative, and cohesive communication initiatives.

Duties/Responsibilities
  • Coordinate with internal departments and partner organizations to maintain the SHI brand and communicate with internal and external audiences effectively.
  • Write and edit content for SHI programming (e.g., press releases, blog posts, reports, video scripts).
  • Coordinate requests related to press releases, outside media outlets, requests for information and photos.
  • Manage social media content and strategy. Engage staff and managers to create content specific to programs.
  • Create, schedule, and send e-blasts.
  • Provide analytics reports on social media accounts.
  • Assist with updates to the SHI website.
  • Coordinate marketing, advertising, public relations, and community outreach.
  • Assist with pre-production and interviews for media and video projects.
  • Assist SHI Store with marketing and online and print advertising.
  • Ensure enforcement of branding and style guide in media products and materials.
  • Occasionally assist with flyers, print materials, presentations, and graphic design work.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Skills
  • Proficient in social media applications.
  • Excellent verbal, writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
  • Able to analyze workflow and processes for improvement and efficiency.
  • Ability to work well on own initiative and within a team.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage priorities.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of branding and marketing strategies.
  • Proficient in Adobe Suite applications.
  • Knowledge of the social, cultural, and economic needs of Southeast Alaska Native Peoples.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to verbally communicate. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, and climbing all day. The employee must frequently lift and/or move objects up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 50 pounds.

About this Role

This is a full-time benefited position. SHI employees are expected to work during SHI’s regular business hours of 8:0 am to 4:30 pm Monday to Friday. Additionally, many employees may work up to 45 hours per week or additional time as needed to meet workload demands or special events such as Celebration.

Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, English, communications, or related field.
  • Two years’ experience in communications development and video production (or relevant/related work experience).
