Job Summary:

The Diagnostic Sonographer responsibilities include performing diagnostic examinations by producing, assessing, and evaluating ultrasound images and related data.

Diagnostic Sonographer I/II:

The Diagnostic Sonographer I & II
, under the direction of a qualified physician, Diagnostic Imaging Director, and senior staff, provides clinically relevant information to assist the physician with the diagnosis and treatment of patients.

Diagnostic Sonographer Iperforms their work in a trainee learning environment while also working toward becoming a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography.

Diagnostic Sonographer II is the journey (full proficiency) level. The incumbent is able to cross train into other modalities but primarily performs their duties independently and according to the specialty areas they are registered and competent in.

Diagnostic Sonographer III:

The Diagnostic Sonographer III, under the direction of a qualified physician, Diagnostic Imaging Director, and senior staff, provides clinically relevant information to assist the physician with the diagnosis and treatment of patients.

Diagnostic Sonographer III performs their duties independently and according to the specialty areas they are registered and competent in. They are distinguished from the lower levels in that this level requires registration in Adult Echo or two non-cardiac specialties and competency in Vascular.

Diagnostic Sonographer IV:

The Diagnostic Sonographer IV, under the direction of a qualified physician, Diagnostic Imaging Director, and senior staff, provides clinically relevant information to assist the physician with the diagnosis and treatment of patients.

Diagnostic Sonographer IV is the expert level and performs their duties independently according to the specialty areas they are registered and competent in. The Diagnostic Sonographer IV applies expert knowledge and requires highly specialized registrations. This position also may be assigned lead duties by the Diagnostic Sonography Supervisor.


Minimum Qualifications for the Job:

Diagnostic Sonographer I:
  • Education:Graduate of an accredited training program in Ultrasonography/Echocardiography. (Completes annual educational requirements to maintain valid Registration.)
  • Experience: New graduate. Competent in two areas.
  • License(s)/Certification(s):
    • Within twelve (12) months of hire, must successfully pass examination and become a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography.
      • Must be Registered in one specialty and competent in one (1) specialty areas prior to being eligible for advancement to Diagnostic Sonographer II.
    • Within three (3) months of hire, obtains Basic Life Support (BLS) & CPR Certification.

  • Career Ladder:
    Incumbents must obtain Level II within (12) months of appointment. Advancement to the Diagnostic Sonographer II level is a condition of employment.

Diagnostic Sonographer II:
  • Education:Graduate of an accredited training program in Ultrasonography/Echocardiography. (Completes annual educational requirements to maintain valid Registration.)
  • Experience: At least one (1) year of recent experience (within the last five (5) years) as a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer.
  • License(s)/Certification(s):
    • ARDMS registered in one specialty from the following list:
      • Obstetrics and Gynecology:

        B) Abdomen:

        C) Pediatric Sonography:

        D) Vascular Technology,

        E) Breast
    • Valid Basic Life Support (BLS) & CPR Certification at time of appointment and for continued employment.
