Protective Services Specialist 1/2 – Anchorage, Alaska

Come join the State of Alaska! This position is open to Alaska residents and is recruiting for a full‑time Protective Services Specialist in the Office of Children’s Services (OCS). The role uses competency‑based minimum qualifications (MQs).

What You Will Be Doing

As a Protective Services Specialist (PSS) you will be responsible for child protection services in the Family Services unit, the Investigations & Assessment unit, or as a generalist covering both. Your duties include:

  • Investigating reports of child abuse and/or neglect.
  • Preparing plans for intervention by soliciting the cooperation of the family and others.
  • Gathering information about family dynamics and functionality.
  • Developing plans to ensure child safety while assisting parents in addressing diminished protective factors.
  • Placing children out of the home with a relative or licensed foster home when necessary.
  • Providing ongoing and/or in‑home services to families.
  • Writing and submitting reports to the court.
  • Working closely with Tribal/Community Partners and other agencies.
  • Maintaining frequent face‑to‑face and telephonic contact with parents and caregivers.

Services are delivered through two components:
In‑home Services and Out‑of‑home Services.

New employees undergo a 12‑month probationary period with formal virtual training, on‑the‑job training, and mentorship. Part‑time telework may be available upon eligibility. A field‑based position involves community work, 2–5 travel trips per month, and occasional overnight stays.

Working Environment

The Anchorage Regional Office is located mid‑town Anchorage. The role requires frequent field work, court attendance, and independent office work. Staff may need to work after hours, on‑call, evenings, weekends, and during emergencies. Travel may involve small aircraft and overnight stays in rural areas.

Additional Requirements
  • Position is flexibly staffed; the level of offer will be based on proven competencies.
  • Valid Real a driver’s license required.
  • Vehicle use may be limited; mileage reimbursement is available.
  • Relocation reimbursement may be provided.
  • A child protective history check, background and fingerprint check will be performed.
