Position: Emergency Management Specialist 2 (090218)

Overview

The Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA), Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (DHS&EM) is recruiting for an Emergency Management Specialist 2 in our Exercise Section. This position is in the General Government (GGU) bargaining unit at a range 16. This position is open to Alaska Residents only. Please check the Definition FAQ to determine if you qualify.

What You Will Be Doing

You will play a pivotal role by supporting statewide and local preparedness for natural and human-caused incidents that may impact life, health, infrastructure, and property. You will assist with the development, implementation, and management of a modern and effective exercise program. You will oversee, coordinate, and evaluate exercise activities across all 19 Alaska boroughs, engaging with communities that represent over 90% of the state’s population.

Special Notice: JBER (BASE) ACCESS may be required. The successful applicant must pass a federal background check for base access and maintain clearance. If using a private vehicle, a valid Alaska Driver License, proof of insurance, and Alaska vehicle registration are required.

Qualifications

One of the following with supporting experience:

  • One year of entry professional level experience mitigating against, preparing for, responding to, or recovering from emergencies, disasters, or terrorist events (equivalent to Emergency Management Specialist 1 with the State of Alaska); OR
  • Two years of entry professional level experience creating contingency plans, conducting exercises, responding to events, or coordinating recovery from such events; OR
  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college, plus one year of experience as described above.

Special Note: A valid Alaska driver’s license is required. Some positions require a federal security clearance. Work may involve travel to remote locations, 24-hour on-call duty, and exposure to hazardous conditions.

Special Instructions and Requirements for applicants include travel to remote field sites, varying weather conditions, and potential wildlife exposure.
