Correctional Officer 2 – Goose Creek Correctional Complex, Wasilla, Alaska
Embark on a career in corrections with the Alaska Department of Corrections. As a Correctional Officer 2 you will play a vital role in reforming those in custody and helping them positively contribute to society. The position is full‑time, requires an 84‑hour work week with a "week on/week off" schedule alternating between day and night shifts.
Responsibilities- Maintain order and discipline, operating the security control room and conducting routine security checks and inspections.
- Utilize self‑defense, firearms, and appropriate force to protect oneself and others, acting quickly in emergencies and diffusing conflicts with sound judgment.
- Read and comprehend statutes, regulations, and procedures, applying them to specific situations and explaining them to the public, staff, and inmate population.
- Assist in creating and maintaining an atmosphere conducive to the rehabilitation of prisoners.
- Provide detailed oral and written instructions, proficiency with business software, and effective communication.
- Demonstrate knowledge of statutes and procedures, with the ability to apply them and explain their relevance.
- Successfully complete the Alaska Correctional Officer Academy or an equivalent program accredited by the Alaska Police Standards Council.
- Have at least one year of experience in a correctional institution (e.g., Correctional Officer
1) or equivalent.
- Maintain order using minimal force and resolve situations in a manner that supports rehabilitation.
- Support the custody, security, and rehabilitation functions within the facility.
- Be 21 years of age and a United States citizen or national. A high‑school diploma, GED, or equivalent is required.
- Possess a valid driver’s license issued in the United States; a commercial driver’s license may be required for some positions.
- Successfully complete a thorough background investigation, psychological evaluation, drug screening, medical examination, and a background packet including notarized personal history statement.
- Be willing to work shift assignments and on‑call availability.
- Up to 16 days of paid leave in the first two years, increasing with years of service.
- 12 paid holidays annually.
- Moving and relocation incentives may be available to the selected candidates.
