Job DescriptionEngineering Assistant 2 (EA 2) – under general supervision, the EA 2 assists the Regional Quality Assurance Engineer (QAE) in providing materials engineering support for a variety of engineering projects, including roads, airports, bridges, and other projects.
What You Will Be Doing- Assist the QAE with materials engineering support across multiple project types.
- Follow accepted design practices and material testing procedures.
- Schedule and assign work to up to three technicians in the Southcoast Region Materials Lab (SRML).
- Maintain national accreditation for the SRML under AASHTO R18, adding new tests and staying current with program requirements.
- Provide materials testing training and serve as the materials test reference for the Southeast Region DOT.

The Working Environment You Can ExpectThe position is located in Juneau. Staff may work in remote or urban locations across Alaska’s diverse terrain, requiring adaptability and resourcefulness to maintain roads, bridges, airports, ports, and public facilities.
Who We Are Looking For- Materials Engineering – knowledge of material composition, structure, properties, and performance under environmental influences.
- Road Work and Pavement – knowledge of materials, methods, and tools for construction, maintenance, or repair of road surfaces.
- Civil Engineering – knowledge of concepts, principles, and methods for planning, designing, constructing, operating, and maintaining public works systems.
- Quality Assurance – knowledge of principles, methods, and tools of quality assurance and control.
- Option 1:
Bachelor’s degree in engineering, architecture, or land surveying from an ABET‑accredited institution + one year as an Engineering Assistant 1 (or equivalent) with the State of Alaska. - Option 2:
Bachelor’s degree in engineering, architecture, or land surveying from a non‑ABET institution + EIT/LSIT certificate (or passing FE/FS exam) + one year as an Engineering Assistant 1 (or equivalent). - Option 3:
Five years of progressively responsible sub‑professional engineering experience, with two years as a Journey Level Engineering Technician or Drafting Technician 3 (or equivalent) with the State of Alaska. - Substitution:
Graduate study in engineering or architecture may substitute for required experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 (2 semester/3 quarter hours equals one month of experience).
