What you will be doing

Join the Central Region Aviation Design Group and gain on‑job training in aviation design! You will assist a Project Manager in developing federally funded improvement projects for state‑owned airports in central and western Alaska. Responsibilities include negotiating engineering consultant contracts, reviewing project designs for quality and compliance, coordinating technical issues, and managing project scopes, budgets, and schedules. You will also provide guidance on federal and state airport design standards.

Our

organization, mission, and culture

Our mission is to "Keep Alaska Moving" as we vitally support Alaska’s people and economy by serving and connecting communities throughout the state. We promote an atmosphere of excellence, integrity, teamwork, and public service and take great pride in the essential transportation services we provide the public.

The Central Region Aviation Design Group designs improvements for over 70 state‑owned airports, many serving isolated communities reliant on air travel for essential services such as medical care, supplies, and transportation. As a Consultant Coordinator, you will support a Project Manager in planning, designing, and delivering projects that enhance these vital airports and improve the lives of Alaskans.

The benefits of joining our team

This position is an excellent platform to learn how to develop and orchestrate projects, work with numerous stakeholders, and do meaningful work that directly improves the safety and quality of life for the people of Alaska. The Department offers unique opportunities to collaborate with highly skilled professionals and further your development as an engineer. Since training in aviation engineering is not common in colleges and universities, most of our staff have learned this career field while working in our office.

You will find a friendly and collaborative environment to learn or further develop aviation engineering and project management skills. We offer a generous leave package that increases with service time and paid state holidays—13 throughout the year.

The working environment you can expect

This position resides in the DOT&PF Central Region Headquarters building at 4111 Aviation Avenue, on the shore of Lake Hood Seaplane Base near Ted Stevens International Airport in Anchorage, Alaska. The standard work week is 37.5 hours with schedule options that allow additional days off. The Department has a flexible telework policy, and travel is occasionally necessary—rarely overnight, and may include flying to remote communities in small single‑engine aircraft.
