Job Description

The recruitment is exempt from the hiring freeze (Administrative Order 358).

What You Will Be Doing

  • Oversees the maintenance of agency aircraft, requiring expertise in aircraft engines, parts, and systems, including their design, use, repair, and maintenance.
  • Manages third‑party maintenance contracts and ensures compliance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations, department standards, and cooperative agency requirements.
  • Schedules, coordinates, and inspects maintenance projects, monitors costs and contractor performance, and conducts routine aircraft maintenance as needed.
  • Inspects, certifies, directs, and assists in the repair, maintenance, and overhaul of diverse aircraft ranging from light single‑engine piston aircraft and helicopters to single‑engine turbine aircraft and helicopters.

The Working Conditions You Can Expect

  • Location:

    Anchorage‑based Aircraft Section at Lake Hood.
  • Occasional travel to the Fairbanks hangar, including several overnight stays each month.
  • Office environment with frequent interruptions; requires self‑motivation and strong teamwork skills.
  • Schedule:

    5 days on, 2 days off. No housing is provided, and paid travel is limited to those living within Anchorage.
  • Travel across Alaska providing aircraft and training support.

What We Are Looking For

  • Acts as a Quality Assurance Evaluator with knowledge of the principles, methods, and tools of quality assurance and quality control for aircraft and avionics maintenance contracts.
  • Knowledge of aircraft engines, parts, and systems, with experience on both fixed‑wing and rotary‑wing aircraft. Preferred experience with piston and turbine engines (PT6, Saffran helicopter).
  • Experience in developing, scheduling, coordinating, and managing projects and resources, monitoring costs and contractor performance, and consistently scheduling, inspecting, and evaluating aircraft repairs in safe, adverse conditions.
  • Must meet or exceed maintenance inspector qualifications, following federal, state, and manufacturer‑recommended procedures.
  • Diagnoses discrepancies reported by pilot staff to determine appropriate mechanical and avionics repairs.

Minimum Qualifications

Eligible to obtain a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Inspector Authorization (IA) Certificate.

Special Note

Must obtain a valid FAA IA Certificate within 12 months of initial hire and maintain it throughout employment. FAA IA Certificate must be submitted with the application; if the applicant currently possesses it, provide a copy at the time of interview.

At Time Of Interview

  • Submit FAA IA Certificate copy (if applicable).
  • Provide any training certificates for Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A, Airbus Helicopter H125, SAFRAN Turbomeca USA Arriel 2D Level 1/2, or Robinson R44 training courses.
  • List three professional references, two from current or former direct supervisors.
  • Submit last two performance evaluations, if available.

Special Notes

  • Maintain currency of FAA Airframe and Powerplant mechanics with Inspection Authorization license 14 CFR 43.3.
  • Valid Alaska driver’s license required.
  • Must pass a background investigation.
  • Occasional after‑hours and weekend work may be required.
  • Willingness and ability to work overtime.

Background Check

Applicants must submit to a fingerprint‑based criminal history background check. Applicants with criminal convictions will not proceed in the selection process.

Education

Provide transcripts to verify educational credentials supporting minimum qualifications. For foreign education, evidence of equivalency must be submitted.
