Northern Region Construction Engineering Assistant 2/3 FLEX (PCN 251436)
The State of Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) Northern Region Design, Engineering, & Construction is seeking a qualified Engineering Assistant 2 or 3 to support the Northern Region Materials Laboratory located in Fairbanks.
What You Will Be Doing- Lead several Highway Engineering Technicians in the Northern Region Construction Laboratory, supporting over 30 projects annually across Alaska’s largest region.
- Work directly with geological, design, and construction professionals in the Arctic construction industry to ensure quality materials testing and documentation.
- Manage, calibrate, and maintain field and laboratory testing equipment while gaining technical and leadership experience with diverse civil construction materials from across Alaska.

- Independently lead the Northern Region Construction Laboratory and Field Laboratory Equipment Program, providing technical direction and training to technicians serving over 30 regional projects.
- Collaborate with geological, design, and construction experts to investigate testing discrepancies, improve procedures, and advance AASHTO accreditation for the laboratory.
- Oversee calibration, maintenance, and suitability evaluations of testing equipment, ensuring regional compliance and consistent quality assurance standards.
Engineering Assistant 2
• Bachelor’s degree in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an ABET‑accredited institution or equivalent non‑ABET institution combined with a valid Engineer‑In‑Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor‑In‑Training (LSIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
• One year of entry‑level engineering, architectural or land surveying experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 with the State of Alaska or an equivalent position elsewhere.
Engineering Assistant 3
• Bachelor’s degree in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an ABET‑accredited institution or equivalent non‑ABET institution combined with a valid Engineer‑In‑Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor‑In‑Training (LSIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
• Two years of engineering, architectural or land surveying experience of which one year was at the working or intermediate trainee level, including experience as an Engineering Assistant 2 with the State of Alaska or an equivalent position elsewhere.
