Job SummaryThe Special Education Department Coordinator assists the department in developing programs for Anchorage School District students receiving special education services, coordinating staff development opportunities for special education staff, and collaborating to support the implementation of special education services. The coordinator provides information to administrators, parents, and teachers on policies and procedures affecting the delivery of services to special education students. This position requires a valid Alaska teaching or administrative certificate and has a retirement association with the Alaska Teachers' Retirement System (TRS).

Required:
- A master's degree.
- An initial, professional, or master Alaska teaching certificate or type C special services certificate with special education endorsement.
- Five years of experience in special education.
- A valid driver's license.
Preferred:
- A master's degree in special education.
- School administration experience.
- Knowledge of theories and practices of special education and related program development.
- Knowledge of federal, state, and ASD special education laws, regulations, and policies.
- Assists in the development of training and programs for students certified for special education and attending private or public school.
- Consults with parents, teachers, and administration regarding both specific student and program needs.
- Coordinates professionally and effectively with ASD and community staff, committees, and agencies in providing special education support programs and services.
- Assists in the development of public information concerning programs and practices of the special education department.
- Works collaboratively with directors and supervisors to share administrative responsibilities.
- Coordinates the planning and implementation of both small and large group in-service and other staff development meetings and trainings for the Special Education and Related Services Departments. Makes effective use of technology tools for both online and in person development.
- Evaluates the performance of assigned classified staff using ASD performance standards.
- Takes initiative, working both independently and collaboratively. Develops creative solutions to problems.
- Coordinates and acts as project manager for assigned department projects.
- Assists in the preparation of annual program reports.
- Coordinates internal and external communication, such as newsletters, flyers, and website.
- Assists in reviewing and purchasing materials for special education students and staff.
- Serves as the department's assessment lead and liaison.
- Coordinates the development and implementation of department goals and initiatives.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to understand vague and implicit instructions, be able to readily recall facts and details, handle conflict and make effective decisions under pressure.
The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.
Work is performed in a professional environment with a wide variety of individuals having differing functions, personalities and abilities, including working with diverse groups of people in a variety of different settings. While performing the duties of this job the employee may be regularly exposed to a video display. The employee may be exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
