SECONDARY SCHOOL COUNSELOR

SUMMARY:

The Secondary School Counselor is responsible for providing guidance and counseling services in such a way as to enhance the academic achievement and social emotional welfare of students. The position is demanding, varied, and complex. The counselor must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and be well trained in content, knowledge, and current guidance and counseling practices.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Plans, organizes, and implements the guidance and counseling program under the direction of the principal and in accordance with District policies and procedures.
  • Collaborates with District technology staff to manage the high school student information system, including scheduling students and staff.
  • Encourages the choice and successful completion of a scholastic program that is consistent with each student s abilities and that will lead to the widest possible choice of post high school opportunities.
  • Assists students in realistic self-appraisal and in adjusting to the scholastic, social, and personal demands of school.
  • Assists in evaluating the overall educational program and recommends changes and additions to the school program.
  • Informs parents of their student s progress, problems, limitations, and abilities, as evidenced in their school experiences.
  • Aids students and their parents in planning post high school experiences.
  • Assist the District Testing Coordinator in school-wide testing program and assists in the interpretation of test results to students, parents, teachers, administrators, and the public as appropriate.
  • Coordinates and proctor post-secondary assessments such as SAT, ACT, and ASVAB when needed.
  • Counsels individual students with regard to academic problems, interpersonal relationships, and behavioral problems.
  • Serves as a liaison between teachers and parents and between teachers and students.
  • Works with teachers toward the resolution of individual student and class management problems and helps provide a suitable learning environment.
  • Assists school administrators by helping to establish effective communications among pupils, teachers, and the administration.
  • Provides school orientation sessions for new students.
  • Makes appropriate referrals to community agencies and private services.
  • Maintains appropriate records and prepares reports in accordance with District policies and procedures.
  • Maintains professional competence through college courses, in-service opportunities, and independent study.
  • Attends and participates in faculty meetings.
  • Meets regularly with other District counselors regarding shared problems and concerns.
  • Maintains a climate of confidentiality and trust in accordance with guidelines adopted as the code of ethics by the American Personnel and Guidance Associations and the Alaska Counselors Association.
  • Adheres to applicable laws, regulations, District policies, work rules, and administrative directives.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or as necessary for the proper operation of the guidance and counseling program.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to work comfortably with students, staff, parents, and the community, from diverse backgrounds, while being responsive to their needs.
  • Effective interpersonal, communication, conflict resolution, time management, and record-keeping skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Valid State of Alaska Teacher s Certificate with K-12 Counselor endorsement or a Type C Special Services Certificate.
  • Knowledge of principles, practices, procedures, and materials pertinent to the guidance and counseling function.
  • Ability to relate positively and cooperatively with students, District personnel, parents, and community members in the public education environment.
  • Ability to carry out successfully the duties described below with minimum supervision.
  • Master s Degree in Guidance and Counseling.
  • Five years of successful experience in a guidance and counseling position.
  • Experience working with student portfolios.
  • Experience with secondary Response to Intervention.
