The Juneau Trial Court of the Alaska Court System is accepting applications for a Chambers Judicial Assistant 1 (salary range 12). The selected applicant will provide assistance and support to the District Court Judge.
JUDICIAL / ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORTProvides administrative and clerical support to judges by ensuring the efficient flow of paperwork between chambers and the clerk’s office, preparing and editing correspondence, orders, and other legal documents, and generating routine orders for signature.
Responds to questions or requests for information, screens calls and visitors to chambers, opens, sorts, and routes mail, and answers routine questions on the status of current projects. Uses tact and discretion in the information given and relays confidential messages.
Gather requested information, data, and statistics at the request of the judge and reviews outgoing correspondence to ensure accuracy, format, grammar, and typographical errors.
Sets up and maintains special records for current projects and correspondence files. Reviews correspondence prepared by other staff members for the judge’s signature for consistency with the judge’s viewpoint and administrative policy.
Maintains daily calendar and makes appointments, coordinates jury trial preparations, arranges for transportation and accommodations, examines and processes expense claims, makes arrangements for meetings, and keeps time and attendance records. Prepares judicial affidavits, leave reports, pay affidavits, and travel expense claims for signature.
GENERAL CASE PROCESSING / FILE MAINTENANCEManages case files by reviewing pending motions, assessing readiness and urgency, scheduling hearings, maintaining an accurate and conflict‑free court calendar, and coordinating jury trial preparations. Determines when motions are ready for judicial review by reviewing the Motion Pull Report, distributes court orders, and coordinates scheduling of hearings and trial dates.
THE WORK HOURSFull‑time court employees are currently scheduled to work 37.5 hours per week. The work hours for this position are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with a one‑hour lunch break.

Graduation from high school or completion of a General Education Development (GED) certificate.
Two years of progressively responsible, fully qualified work experience as an administrative assistant.
Substitution Options- Completion of an appropriate vocational training course of study such as legal secretary, paralegal, or office skills will substitute for one year of the required administrative assistant work experience.
- A bachelor's degree from an accredited college will substitute for one year of the required administrative assistant work experience.
- Twelve months of work experience performing general clerical work that demonstrates work skills equal to those of a Court Case Manager 1 with the Alaska Court System will substitute for one year of the required administrative assistant work experience.
Work experience as a legal administrative assistant is preferred. Positions in this job classification are in the partially‑exempt service and serve at‑will to the appointing authority.
