Position: OFFICE ASSISTANT 2 (PCN 10-N24029)

Office Assistant 2 – McGrath (Alaska Residents Only)

Position within the Division of Forestry & Fire Protection, responsible for administrative support for incidents and project activities in the Southwest area.

What You Will Be Doing
  • Process Emergency Fire Fighter hiring packets and payroll using the E-I suite for submittal to the Division’s Regional Office for final approval.
  • Assist with accounts payable and receivable.
  • Assist with Mess Hall Meal Tracking Sheets (data entry) and email correspondence.
  • Provide basic clerical support: typing, copying, faxing, scanning, document filing/distribution, auditing timesheets, small-office procurement, answering phones, and mail distribution.
  • Other duties as assigned.

The Division of Forestry and Fire Protection Southwest Area provides Wildland Fire Suppression and Support activities for 88 million acres. The area continues to implement Wildland Fire Suppression and Fuels Reduction Programs to protect remote communities and valuable infrastructure. Administrative support for incidents and project activities is a vital part of the daily functions.

Working Environment

Based in McGrath, in the Southwest region of Alaska, off the road system and only accessible by aircraft or boat. The position requires on-site work at the McGrath Office from April through September. The incumbent may be required to work long hours (including evenings and weekends), fly in small fixed-wing aircraft, and work extended periods away from home.

    Knowledge of filing, typing, entering data, maintaining records, taking shorthand, and using and completing forms.
Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent. One year of experience that includes clerical tasks such as greeting clients, answering phones, typing, filing, sorting mail, entering data, receiving payments, making change, or maintaining logs.

Education from an accredited college may substitute for the required experience (3 semester hours or 4 quarter hours equal one month of experience; 150 hours of vocational education equal one month of experience).

Special note: "High school diploma equivalent" means one of the following: a GED; completion of any basic adult education course equivalent to 480 class hours; acceptance in full standing by an accredited college or university; highest grade of school completed plus an amount of paid or volunteer experience that totals 12 years and includes basic clerical tasks.

Some positions may require operation of motor vehicles (regular driver’s license, 18+). Some may require typing skill.

  • Two professional references.
  • Copy of two performance evaluations or letters of recommendation from a former supervisor.
