The staff auditor position is the agency s entry-level audit position, learning basic audit skills and performing entry-level tasks under supervision.
General DescriptionThe division conducts financial, compliance, and performance audits of state departments and programs. Each year, it audits the State s significant financial activities and performs compliance testing for federal programs as part of the statewide single audit. Special audits are conducted to evaluate specific state operations.
Minimum Annual Salary: $79,384.50 - $90,577.50.

- Performs auditing procedures and techniques in accordance with audit standards established by the AICPA and government audit standards issued by the Comptroller General of the United States.
- Prepares work papers that are thorough, complete, and accurate, documenting audit procedures.
- Researches laws, regulations, contracts, and grant agreements to determine if programs and processes are being administered accordingly.
- Follows audit procedures to identify errors and summarize findings.
- Interviews state agency personnel regarding operations and documents the interviews.
- Works with state agency personnel to obtain audit documentation.
- Depending on experience, develops audit procedures and assists in writing audit reports.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Ability to communicate in a professional manner.
- Knowledge of or willingness to obtain knowledge of AICPA and Government Auditing Standards.
- Ability to evaluate business processes, identify risks, and identify controls that should be in place.
- Ability to read, comprehend, and analyze information.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to research and interpret federal and state laws, rules, and regulations.
- Ability to interpret and implement new accounting and auditing pronouncements.
- Ability to maintain confidential information.
- Ability to work in a team environment and foster a positive work atmosphere.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet frequent deadlines.
- Ability to lift up to 40 pounds.
- Possess a valid driver s license.
Applicants must be qualified (or soon will be qualified) to sit for the CPA exam and commit to studying for and passing the CPA exam, or have already passed the CPA exam or parts of it. A minimum GPA of 3.25 from an accredited university or college in a field relevant to this position is required.
Required Documents:
In addition to the Workplace Alaska application, a cover letter and transcripts are required. The cover letter should describe strengths, education, and experience, and must describe your plan to study for and pass the CPA exam.
Education and CPA Exam Eligibility:
Applicants must meet (or soon meet) the eligibility requirement in Alaska to take the CPA exam. Refer to the Alaska Board of Public Accountancy website for current statutes and regulations.
Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the above requirements if applicable. If utilizing this education, show that credentials have been submitted to a private organization for interpretation or that the credential is deemed equivalent to U.S. education; otherwise provide evidence when applying.
