Basic Function/Purpose

The Social Science instructor provides effective curriculum instruction that promotes and supports college and career readiness for each student based on the Kansas College and Career Readiness Standards. The individual accepting this position will also work collaboratively within the Social Science Department in support of the department’s goals and objectives.

Physical Requirements

The employee performing the duties of this position is frequently required to walk, sit, talk, hear, bend, stoop, and reach. The employee may be occasionally required to manually lift, move, or carry up to 50 pounds. The employee is required to interact with staff and meet the demands of several different people. The employee is responsible for the work output of others.

The employee occasionally works extended hours. Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Essential Functions
  • Planning and preparation based upon students needs, demonstrating knowledge of pedagogy, content, and students, selecting instructional goals, demonstrating knowledge of resources, assessing student learning using appropriate measures.
  • Classroom environment: create a classroom environment of respect and rapport, establish a culture for learning, establish and maintain classroom procedures, establish expectations for and manage student behaviors, organize space for learning.
  • Instruction based upon state standards, district curriculum, and student needs as well as industry standards: communicate clearly and accurately, use a variety of instructional strategies and techniques, engage students in learning, provide timely feedback to students, demonstrate flexibility and responsiveness to student needs.
  • Professional responsibilities: follow contractual responsibilities, engage in reflective practice, maintain accurate records, communicate with families, engage in professional development activities, maintain appropriate licensure, collaborate with others to achieve a common goal.
  • Performance Responsibilities
    • Instruct and direct social science content classrooms, which include, but are not limited to U.S. History, World History and U.S. Government.
    • Responsible for the organization and implementation of Social Science curriculum aligned to the state standards. Curriculum is based on the development of content Units at a Glance, as approved at the building and district level(s).
    • Submit required reports in a timely manner, participate in staff, department, committee, and team meetings.
    • Obtain instructional resources and materials through processes outlined by the Principal and/or the Department of Teaching & Learning.
    • Keep informed regarding new technologies and research-based teaching practices that facilitate and support student learning.
    • Support the vision and mission of JCHS, a Career Academy High School; and work to develop and sustain the climate and culture of the academy model.
    • Participate as a team member with the department, academy and both licensed and non-licensed staff in a comprehensive evaluation, review, and re-evaluation process.
    • Communicate clearly and accurately with administrators, staff, parents, students and support agencies.
