Job SummaryThe Physician Assistant provides professional clinical services under the direction of the Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) Primary Care Provider (PCP). The PA is an Advanced Practice Generalist who delivers a wide range of health services, including urgent and emergent evaluation of episodic and chronic problems, and comprehensive primary health care addressing ongoing health care needs. Responsibilities include assessment, treatment and evaluation of health care problems;
emergency measures; preventive health; prescribing medications; ordering, conducting, interpreting laboratory and diagnostic studies; and patient and family education utilizing community, social, and health resources. The PA maintains knowledge of current practice, acts as a role model and mentor to other PAs, advocates for patients, and participates in professional activities at local and state levels.
- Provide primary and preventive medical care to meet patients’ physical, mental, and emotional needs within the scope of current CPT codes and training.
- Provide medical patient care to the scope and standards of practice of a nationally recognized PA credentialing organization.
- Function within the PA scope of practice per state laws and applicable standards (e.g., Joint Commission, VA guidelines).
- Collaborate with the Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT) and extended support staff; participate in daily huddles.
- Emphasize wellness, prevention, and early detection.
- Supervise support staff in delivery of care; maintain universal precautions and infection control.
- Ensure smooth patient flow in accordance with VA access standards and triage protocol.
- Perform CPR and assist during respiratory and cardiac arrest procedures.
- Gather and assess patient history; perform examinations; diagnose health problems; develop and implement treatment plans.
- Prescribe medications as appropriate; order and interpret diagnostic tests; follow up on laboratory tests and procedures.
- Refer patients for specialty care as needed; coordinate primary care services for walk-in patients.
- Document patient information in medical records (VISTA) and maintain continuity of care.
- Maintain clinic reminders (VISTA) and close patient charts within appropriate time frames; assist with scheduling per VA standards.
- Provide patient and family education; ensure documentation accuracy; comply with applicable regulations and safety directives.
- Participate in performance improvement programs and staff development; maintain confidentiality and patient privacy.
- Aid in management of the CBOC day-to-day activities; perform other duties within privileges.
- Minimum 2 years clinical PA experience in outpatient Family Medicine or Internal Medicine; 3–5 years preferred.
- Current, unrestricted DEA license; credentialing/Scope of Practice with a state-licensed physician prior to delivering care.
- Current Arkansas license; comply with state requirements and regulations.
- BLS/CPR certification (AHA or MTN).
- Prescriptive authority per state rules; ability to set realistic education goals; provide individualized and group education focused on prevention and health maintenance.
- Experience with safe opioid practices for chronic pain; working knowledge of Microsoft Office; strong communication and multitasking skills.
- Must maintain confidentiality and demonstrate diplomacy in difficult situations.
- One of the following: a) Bachelor’s degree from a PA program certified by CAHEA; or b) PA program of at least 12 months certified by CAHEA with a health care-related bachelor’s degree; or c) PA program of at least 12 months certified by CAHEA with progressively responsible health care experience. Total education and experience must total at least five years.
- Must maintain a current NCCPA Physician Assistant certification.
- Moderate physical activity; ability to lift up to 25 pounds or stand/walk for extended periods.
- Typical interior/office environment; respond to medical emergencies within clinic requiring rapid action.
