The main focus of this PhD project is to explore how management control systems can facilitate the implementation of circular economy strategies within small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The research aims to address how tools like planning, performance measurement, incentives, and cultural controls can be leveraged to coordinate and scale circular practices in SMEs, informing both academic theory and business practice and contributing to policy discussions on sustainability.

This doctoral project is supervised by Professor Jean-Marie Courrent and Assistant Professor Chaffik Bakkali. You will conduct research within the Montpellier Research in Management (MRM) laboratory, with access to Lab Entreprendre and the Chaire Ecocirculab. The position includes a three-year doctoral contract starting in September 2026, ensuring financial stability for your research and professional development.

• Strong academic background in management, business administration, sustainability, environmental economics, or related fields.
• Interest in circular economy, management control systems, and SME development.
• Analytical and critical thinking skills; ability to work independently and collaboratively in a research environment.
• Experience with qualitative and/or quantitative research methods preferred.
• Motivation to engage with practitioners and contribute to real-world change.
• Fluency in English;
  French proficiency may be beneficial but is not required.
