As a Quality Control (QC) Laboratory Technician
, you’ll help keep our asphalt materials and mixes on spec and on track
. You’ll perform lab testing
, document results with precision, and work closely with the QC Manager, plant teams, and paving crews to solve problems fast—so production and paving can keep moving.
This is a seasonal, hourly role typically running from April through late November each year. The role will be based primarily out of Thornton, IL with occasional travel to our plants in Joliet and Bourbonnais, IL, so reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license are required.
Seasonal role each year (mid March – early December; guaranteed 40 weeks) with a daily start between 5:00–7:00am
, primarily early mornings - mid afternoons, with overtime available in afternoons and on weekends and the flexibility to work evenings/nights/weekends as needed during peak season.
- Collect samples of aggregate, RAP, asphalt binder, and finished mix (plants/stockpiles/job sites)
- Run standardized tests including gradation (sieve analysis), asphalt content (ignition/extraction), density/compaction, moisture, plus exposure to performance testing like Hamburg Wheel, IFIT, TSR
- Follow ASTM/AASHTO and project/state requirements
- Identify out-of-spec results and alert the QC Manager right away
- Support troubleshooting through retesting and additional sampling
- Help recommend corrective actions when needed
- Log test results clearly and accurately (lab records/digital systems)
- Share summaries for QC review and project teams
- Transport QC materials between plants/industry locations as needed
- Maintain a clean, organized lab
- Calibrate/clean/maintain equipment (sieves, ovens, gauges, etc.)
- Report malfunctions and support repairs
Required:
- High school diploma/GED
- Valid driver’s license
- Strong attention to detail + basic math for test calculations
- Clear communication + organized documentation habits
- Ability to stay flexible in a fast-moving environment
- Lab, materials testing, or construction experience
- IDOT/INDOT certifications (HMA Levels I/II, Nuclear Density, PCC Levels I/II, Aggregate, etc.)
- Outdoor/plant exposure regularly (dust, weather, active job sites)
- Lift/move up to 50 lbs unassisted
- Extended hours and occasional nights/weekends based on construction schedules; after-hours communication as needed
