DUTIES AND REQUIREMENTS
The Permit Technician position is responsible for being the initial point of contact for permit applications. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, providing basic guidance about the zoning ordinance, and building ordinance requirements, explaining application procedures for zoning ordinance and building ordinance-related applications, accepting applications and associated fees, and verifying application accuracy and completeness. Additional responsibilities may include reviewing certain building permit applications for ordinance compliance with subsequent approval and permit issuance.
Follow‑up responsibilities will include scheduling inspections, issuing inspection results and certificates of occupancy, and managing contractor registration.
High school graduation or equivalency, as well as familiarity with legal descriptions, zoning and subdivision processes, building permit processes, and general principles of land use are required. This includes being able to read and interpret architectural and engineering plans, site plans, and specifications and legal documents relative to zoning, building, and land development regulations. It is preferred that candidates have excellent organizational ability, with attention to detail and thoroughness, and aptitude with Microsoft Office software.
A knowledge of Will County and Will County Land Use Department services and programs, County, township, and municipal government structure, and Will County geography is beneficial. Evening work hours may be required. Must have or gain within twelve (12) months an Emergency Management Agency (EMA) certification in damage assessment and management procedures to allow permit application and the issuance of “fast tracking.”
Must possess a valid Driver’s License and minimum liability insurance required by law.
