Position: Assistant Teacher Ages 18+ because of working with infants
Supervised By
- Reports To:
Lead Teacher & Director - not allowed to be alone in a classroom until 455 hours & all PDIs classes are completed
Salary range: $17/$18/hr DOE
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent, at least 18 years of age. Ability to complete 22 hours of training via Colorado Shines online, free training before working.
Experience: Some previous hands-on experience working with children
Summary of Position:
The Teacher Assistant means a staff member who works under the supervision of the Lead Teacher, Program Director & is responsible to assist with a group of children, with doing routine tasks so the Lead teacher has more time to ‘teach’ and assists in the implementation of social/emotional training/modeling for the children 1st/foremost. Teaching children how to be a good human, manners, teaching sign language & language skills is essential.
Responsibilities- Arrives on time to work or 5 minutes early.
- Is reliable in attendance.
- Gives ample notice for absence. 2 weeks preferred.
- Remains calm in a tense situation.
- Performs duties, cleaning needs, laundry, preparation & clean up before/after activities.
- Participate as an equal team member of all center staff.
- Ask lead teacher &/or director what you can help with or what needs to be done & do it in a thorough & organized, yet quick fashion.
- Assist teachers by ensuring supplies are available and taking care of laundry, dishes, stocking without disturbing them.
- Maintain a gossip-free and positive work environment.
- Follow the policies and procedures of the program.
- Take the lead to ensure all children wash their hands.
- Assist in handwashing at classroom entry and before eating.
- Teach kids to wash hands and maintain hygiene; support during diaper changes & potty-training trips.
- Maintain a safe, clean environment, while allowing occasional messy play.
- Have pleasant conversations with children during routine times and provide time cues for transitions using timers as needed.
- Communicate with fellow staff in the classroom; keep personal information private.
- Continuously teach children self-help skills and the use of utensils.
- Assist in clean up and ensure supplies are available without disturbing teachers.
- Provide a quiet, calm and pleasant environment for rest time and naps.
- Practice universal precautions to avoid blood borne pathogens and germs.
We should never send a child home with a dirty face, dirty hands or a dirty diaper.
- Change diapers a few minutes before you expect a child to be picked up.
- Explain safety reasons to children in a short, simple manner.
- Leave bathroom door ajar when helping a child with the potty, always wash hands even if no one went.
- Shows warmth and affection through appropriate contact (gentle touch, hugs when appropriate).
- Engages eye-to-eye at the child’s level and helps them calm down and work through problems.
- Sits on the floor near children and encourages cooperation, sharing and positive play.
- Uses the child’s name and appropriate voice tone.
- Respects children and adapts to developmental levels; recognizes different play types.
- Encourages independence and self-help; supports learning through guided activity.
- Engages with children daily to support positive relationships.
- Reinforces positive behavior and uses positive guidance techniques.
- Maintains active involvement during activities instead of remaining static in one place.
- Creates an inviting learning environment and maintains a safe, organized space.
- Follows the Lead Teacher’s direction to balance routines of active and calming activities.
- Provides age-appropriate activities and supports book/tork materials care.
- Supports vocabulary growth and early literacy through everyday activities.
- Facilitates open-ended art, music, movement experiences and dramatic play.
- Assists in preparing activities and projects as requested by the Lead Teacher.
- Collaborates with the Lead Teacher to manage transitions and reminders for children.
