Overview

The WG-9 Maintenance Mechanic (Carpenter/Painter) position is assigned to the Maintenance Unit C within the Engineering Service of the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position - applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

  • VALID DRIVER'S LICENSE:
    Applicants must maintain a current state issued valid driver's license. You must provide a legible copy of your license to verify the year issued and expiration date along with the name on the document with your application. You will not be contacted for this document.   • EXPERIENCE:

    A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality to perform the work. Evidence demonstrating knowledge, skills, and ability must be supported by detailed descriptions on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.
  • SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT:
    Qualifications will first be evaluated against the screen-out element (usually appears as question 1 in the online questionnaire). Those with at least minimal acceptable qualifications are considered for further rating; those who do not are ineligible and eliminated.

  • Experience may include paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work through National Service programs and other organizations. Credit is given for qualifying experience including volunteer work. A full year of work is 35-40 hours per week; part-time experience is credited on a prorated basis.
Duties
  • Maintenance Mechanic duties include routine carpenter work: assembly and installation of modular furniture and wall partitions.
  • Plan, layout, build, fabricate, install, maintain, repair and replace building interior and exterior structural, architectural, finish features, furnishings, modules, and related equipment.
  • Responsible for surfaces, selecting the proper type of paint for the surface, coordinating with JHQVAMC interior design, and preparing surfaces to receive paint as required.
  • Typical work includes visual examinations and work layout to determine needs for space moves, planning, and execution of new fabrication.
  • Prepare surfaces and apply coating techniques to achieve a smooth, textured, decorative appearance meeting thickness and level requirements.
  • Determine methods, techniques, devices, and materials best suited to the surface finish required (glossy finish or other as specified).
  • Plan, measure, and lay out carpentry materials; measure, cut, repair, install, and modify items such as concrete forms, roof decking, rafters, walls, staircases, windows, and frames.
  • Interprets blueprints, building codes, and shop mathematics; interprets complex or incomplete instructions.
  • Qualified to use a variety of carpentry tools and equipment (saws, hammers, files, augers, shovels, brushes, spray guns, torque wrenches, etc.).
  • Operates and uses carpentry tools and machines; uses production techniques such as silk screen printing and application of reflective sheeting and lettering with machines; makes stencils or templates as needed.
  • Thorough knowledge of wood and wood substitute materials and construction techniques.
  • Work Schedule:

    Monday-Friday, 08:00-04:45.

    Physical requirements:

    considerable physical exertion, including maneuvering large equipment, climbing ladders, working in high locations and various weather conditions, and occasional work in drafty or cramped spaces; may work in contaminated areas and in areas with gases and fumes; noise level may be high.
