The WG-9 Maintenance Mechanic (Carpenter/Painter) Position is assigned to the Maintenance Unit C within the Engineering Service of the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center.

Maintenance Mechanic the incumbent's duties include, but are not limited to:

* Performs routine carpenter duties to include assembly and installation of various items such as modular furniture and wall partitions.

* The primary duties of the incumbent are to plan, layout, build, fabricate, install, maintain, repair and replace building interior and exterior structural, architectural and finish features including furnishings, modules and related equipment.

* Incumbent is responsible to manage ,surfaces, select proper type of paint for the prescribed surface, coordinate with JHQVAMC interior design, and prepares surfaces to receive paint as required.

* Performs routine carpenter duties to include assembly and installation of various items.

* Typical work assignments include the performance of visual examinations and work layout to determine the need for, and the performance of, preparatory work to support space moves and planning and execution of new fabrication.

* Prepares surfaces and applies coating techniques that will insure surfaces have a smooth-textured and decorative appearance and meet thickness and level requirements.

* Determines the methods, techniques. devices, an materials that are best suited to the surface finish required using a glossy finish, or a finish that must meet specified thickness and levels.

* Plans, measures and lays out carpentry materials.

* Measures, cuts repairs, installs and modifies items such as concrete forms, roof decking, rafters, walls, staircases, windows, and frames.

* Ability to interpret complex instructions.

* Interprets sketches, blueprints, building codes, and uses shop mathematics.

* Interprets complex or incomplete instructions.

* Must be qualified to use a variety of tools such as saws, hammers, metal and wood files, augers, shovels, paint brushes, spray guns, torque wrenches, feeler gages, planes, skill saws, radial arm saw, band saws, chain saws, joiners, electric sanders, voltmeter, ohmmeter, fuse tester, in the performance of their assigned duties.

* Operates and uses carpentry tools by setting up, adjusting, and maintaining tools to meet required specifications.

* Operates and uses a wide variety of machines and tools.

* Uses various production techniques such as silk screen printing, application of reflective .sheeting and lettering with machines.

* Makes stencils, templates, or paper patterns as necessary, to reproduce designs or shapes.

* Thorough knowledge of wood and wood substitute materials and construction techniques.

Physical Requirements:

Considerable physical exertion is required  to large equipment and components in the systems that must be maneuvered into and out of specific locations while dismantling and reassembling. Considerable manual manipulation and physical strain exerted in tedious repairs and hard-to-get-to locations. Makes repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding and platform at times due to high locations or hard-to-reach places. Works in tiring positions, stooping, stretching, bending, kneeling, and standing.

Work is performed both inside and outside. Required to work on top of tall buildings. Required to work on top of tall buildings in abnormal temperature and all types of weather conditions. Work required at . times in drafty attic spaces and cramped areas with low overheads. Hazards from electrical shock and possibility of burns. May work in contaminated areas and may be subject( to obnoxious gases and fumes, cuts, bruises, and scrapes.

Noise level may often be high.
