Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit an EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after a complete review of the application.

• English Language Proficiency – required for direct patient care positions
• Graduate of a state‑approved practical or vocational nursing school or accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC)
• Active, full, current and unrestricted licensure as a Licensed Practical or Vocational Nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (including Puerto Rico) or the District of Columbia
• May qualify under the Grandfathering Provision described in the VA Qualification Standard (applicable only to current VHA employees in this occupation)
• Grade‑specific criteria (GS‑03 to GS‑06)
  • GS‑03:
    Advanced beginner level, direct patient care under RN supervision
  • GS‑04:
    Advanced beginner level, direct patient care under RN supervision
  • GS‑05:
    Full range of practical nursing care, orientation of less experienced LPNs, NAs, and Health Technicians
  • GS‑06:
    Proficient in initiating, performing, and completing assigned duties with variable patient populations; knowledge of medication administration and emergency interventions
• Preferred Experience:
  
  >1 year in a hospital setting; BLS certification; acute care experience within the last two years

• Demonstrate proficiency in initiating, performing, and completing assigned duties while providing care to diverse patient populations
• Maintain knowledge of patient conditions and apply appropriate orders, procedures, and treatments using judgement
• Recognize and report urgent and emergent situations; initiate appropriate emergency interventions as directed
• Prepare and administer prescribed medications (oral, topical, subcutaneous, intramuscular, intravenous) and perform treatments per established policies
• Document and report relevant patient information, including changes in condition from medications and treatments
• Serve as a responsible member of the clinic, interacting with patients, families, and multidisciplinary staff
• Assist with answering the phone, conveying messages, and placing calls/pages as needed
• Participate in team conferences, providing input and presenting patient cases for discussion
• Assist with data collection and the application of research findings to practice as directed by the Nurse Manager or designee
• Provide education to patients and families regarding care plans and treatment procedures
• Manage reusable medical equipment, ensuring proper cleaning, transportation, and compliance with SOPs and Infection Prevention & Control guidelines
• Maintain physical capability to perform job functions: visual acuity, hearing, speech, manual dexterity; ability to walk, stand, stoop, bend, lift >10 pounds, and transfer patients and objects as required
