Overview

The NA provides clinical and administrative support in a wide variety of patient care activities within Nursing Service, including roles assigned to Escort Services (direct patient care, patient transport, and Reusable Medical Equipment cleaning). The NA functions as a member of the nursing care team and assists licensed nursing staff in caring for patients/residents receiving preventive, acute, sub-acute, chronic, maintenance, and hospice care.

Responsibilities
  • Provide patient/resident care during day, evening, and night tours of duty, including observing, reporting, and recording pertinent information in the electronic medical record.
  • Recognize and respond to emergent patient/resident care situations and intervene while awaiting assistance.
  • Identify the need for basic life support, control bleeding, and assist with behavioral crises, as applicable.
  • Assist with or perform diagnostic studies and treatments/procedures; educate patients regarding selected treatment procedures.
  • Work with initiative and minimal supervision; demonstrate leadership to the nursing assistant staff and teach proper technique and procedure by example.
  • Promote patient motivation, independence, and rehabilitation; foster self-worth and dignity for patients.
  • Work in multiple settings (outpatient, inpatient, long-term care, hospice/palliative care, acute and sub-acute) under supervision as needed.
  • Care for patients/residents with acute to chronic conditions and provide a full range of nursing care for various physical and/or behavioral problems.
Work Schedule, Pay & Benefits
  • Work Schedule:

    Full-time (night shift).
  • Pay:
    Competitive salary with regular increases; higher pay steps may be determined based on qualifications or needs of the VA.

  • Paid Time Off: 37–50 days per year (13–26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 Federal holidays).
  • Parental Leave:
    Up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave after 12 months of employment.
  • Child Care Subsidy:
    After 60 days, eligible full-time employees with family income below $144,000 may receive up to 25% of eligible childcare costs (up to $416.66 monthly).
  • Retirement:
    Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% VA contributions.
  • Insurance:
    Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care insurance (may carry into retirement).
