Overview
The incumbent is under the direct supervision of the Section Chief of Anesthesia in Surgery Service. The Medical Instrument Technician (Anesthesia) (anesthesia technician) represents the full performance level. The anesthesia technician at this level assists anesthesiologists and nurse anesthetists in difficult anesthetic procedures under minimal supervision.
Responsibilities- Connect and operate invasive hemodynamic monitoring equipment (e.g., arterial pressure monitors), anesthesia machines, ventilators, intubation bronchoscopes, and ultrasonic scanning devices.
- Prepare and administer medications as directed by the attending physician.
- Mentor and train lower graded technicians, nurses, medical students, and anesthesia residents on anesthesia technology procedures and assist the supervisor/manager with quality control and performance improvement activities.
- Exercise a high degree of independent judgment in anesthesia technology duties.
- Maintain anesthesiology supplies and equipment, set up anesthetizing locations and operate, monitor, and collect data from anesthesia related equipment.
- Perform clinical laboratory functions, equipment preventive maintenance/repair, and assist with special procedures such as cardiac output measurement, vessel cannulation including arterial and central lines, pulmonary artery catheterization and transfusion services.
- Aid and assist anesthesiologists and nurse anesthetists in performing procedures that involve regional anesthesia (epidural and spinal), monitored anesthesia care and general anesthesia.
- Connect and operate noninvasive hemodynamic monitoring equipment, blood and fluid warmers, and patient warming devices.
- Assist in difficult anesthetic procedures under minimal supervision and mentor/train staff as described.

Pay:
Competitive salary and regular salary increases. When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade).
Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time off per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year). Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience.
Parental Leave:
After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.
Child Care Subsidy:
After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66.
Retirement:
Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA.
