Johnson City Public Library’s User Services Department – Programming Librarian
Johnson City Public Library’s User Services Department has an opening for a Programming Librarian. This position supports the mission and values of the Johnson City Public Library while performing professional library work in the User Services Department under the supervision of the Assistant Director of User Services, to serve the public and increase community engagement.
Distinguishing Features of the ClassificationA staff member in this position plans and implements programs to engage the community in ways that reflect the Library’s mission and values. They work closely with the Library’s Marketing Coordinator to promote and raise awareness of library programs. They provide information and research help, readers’ advisory, and technology assistance to the public and ensure compliance with library policies and procedures.
This employee provides instruction on library and computer usage, reference and instruction for staff and the public, and may serve on committees. They provide guidance and support for library assistants and clerks, and they oversee the User Services area of the library when acting as the senior staff on duty. All work is evaluated through conferences and observations for soundness of judgment, innovation, and initiative in developing the assigned areas.
and Responsibilities
- Plans and executes outcome-based programs that fulfill the Library’s mission, values, and strategic plan
- Develops long-term programming strategies and forward‑thinking program initiatives
- Maintains program policies and best practices
- Assists with strategies to promote library programs, working closely with the Library’s Marketing Coordinator
- Provides and models exceptional customer service
- Provides front line information, research assistance, and readers’ advisory services using the Library’s physical and digital collections
- Provides instruction and troubleshooting on public computers, printing, digital collections, and other technical assistance
- Assists with computer and personal technology tutoring and test proctoring
- Ensures that library policies and procedures are followed to maintain a safe and welcoming environment for all staff and patrons
- Increases skills and knowledge through professional development opportunities
- Performs other duties as assigned, independently and as part of a team
- Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of library science and the ability to instruct others in the applications of these principles and practices.
- Knowledge of and desire to explore trends and innovations in the field.
- Ability to plan and direct the work of staff engaged in providing reference services, collection development, adult programming, digital literacy instruction, and marketing.
- Has excellent communication skills and presents ideas effectively orally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all library personnel and the public.
A master’s degree in library science is required. Some applicable experience is desired.
