Overview
Smart Start is a successful national network of NGOs and partners that is realising quality, affordable early learning for all children aged three to five. We are achieving this by scaling a network of and building a platform for providers, achieving specific ecosystem transformations with governments and partners, and promoting early learning as a priority societal cause.
ResponsibilitiesVideo and visual content creation
- Create instructional videos in Canva using scripts provided by other Smart Start team members (usually in the EL&LD team).
- In some cases, write scripts and create videos based on briefs provided by other Smart Start team members (usually in the EL&LD team).
- Create simple graphics to use in online courses (and possibly Whats App communications with Smart Starters).
- Review early learning materials designed by the Head of EL & LD or other team members.
- Support the design of early learning materials such as the Smart Start curriculum, Small & Large Group Activity book and home learning activities & storybooks.
- Participate in the review and design process of EL materials, led by the Head of EL & LD.
Basic graphic design
- Make text changes and small edits to graphics in InDesign documents.
- Do basic graphic design work that does not require the skills and experience of a professional graphic designer.
- Do layout work of documents and presentations in Word and PowerPoint.
- Create quizzes and simple activities in Moodle.
- Upload images and video content to Moodle.
- Design and review online learning courses with the support of EL & LD team members.
Essential Skills and Experience
- 2-5 years’ experience in education or non-profit sectors.
- At least 1-2 years’ experience in the ECD sector.
- At least 1-2 years’ experience in video creation and editing or learning design.
Strong visual design skills (i.e. be able to envision and create professional looking and visually inspiring images and videos).
Video creation and editing skills.
Strong skills in Canva and basic skills in InDesign.
Learning design skills – the ability to design simple and engaging instructional content (for online and print materials).
Ability to create simple quizzes and activities and design basic courses in Moodle.
Skills in creating and understanding contextually relevant content for South Africans with limited digital literacy and English literacy.
Ability to design content to support holistic child development and early learning.
An understanding of the core principles of early learning pedagogy.
Ability to design collaboratively and work in a team environment.
Desirable Skills and Experience- Essential: A degree in education, ECD, social work or child psychology.
- Non-essential but an asset: A qualification in visual art or graphic design.
