STARTING SALARY RANGE: $38,843 - $39,887 per year

FULL-TIME/PART-TIME: Full-Time

WORKWEEK: 6am - 8pm (scheduled 35 hours/week). Evenings and weekends will be scheduled as needed.

JCFPL is the largest municipal library in the State of New Jersey, with ten locations and growing, serving Jersey City and surrounding communities. The staff reflects the cultural and linguistic diversity of Jersey City, with many languages spoken.

About the Position

Under direction, the candidate will perform varied simple and moderately physically strenuous tasks involved in cleaning and maintaining public library buildings and grounds. May assist in making minor repairs to buildings and/or equipment and other related duties as required. Patrols the library grounds and buildings to provide protection to persons gathered therein from harm, and protects public property against fire, theft, vandalism, and illegal or unauthorized entry.

License requirement: SORA (Security Officer Registration Act) license is required or must be obtained within the first 45 days of employment.

Job Duties

  • Cleans rooms, offices, public areas and restrooms
  • Washes and cleans windows; cleans floors (sweeps, washes, strips, waxes, and polish); vacuums carpets and rugs;
    May paint in various areas
  • May make minor repairs to heating, electrical, and other systems
  • Empties wastebaskets, inside and outdoors; assists with removal and storage of books and other items
  • Distributes supplies
  • May trim hedges, rake leaves, trim driveway and sidewalk edges using equipment
  • Shovels snow and spreads sand or salt on icy surfaces
  • Visually inspects windows, doors, locks, and other fixtures to ensure security and proper operation
  • Removes individuals from premises following verbal warnings for violations of rules
  • Gives verbal warnings to individuals regarding regulations to enforce building rules
Knowledge and Abilities
  • Knowledge of use of and minor adjustment to sweepers, vacuum, furniture, and fixtures
  • Knowledge of minor repairs to heating, electrical, plumbing, and other systems
  • Ability to handle cleaning equipment and move moderately heavy objects; organize cleaning work
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position;
    American Sign Language or Braille may be considered acceptable forms of communication
  • Knowledge of techniques for maintaining order among groups of people on public property
  • Ability to note significant conditions by observation and take proper action per procedures
Required Licenses
  • Appointee must possess a driver’s license valid in New Jersey if operation of a vehicle is necessary to perform duties
  • SORA (Security Officer Registration Act) license is required or must be obtained within the first 45 days of employment
