Overview
JUVENILE DETENTION OFFICER — Department of Corrections. Starting Salary: $37,490. Open to applicants in Cumberland County, NJ.
Responsibilities- Transports juveniles to detention and treatment facilities, court appearances, medical appointments, and other locations.
- Inspect transport vehicles before and after trips for contraband.
- Maintain vehicle transport logs and report any vehicle maintenance needs to the Juvenile Division Administrative Staff.
- Plan timing and route of trips; determine and follow the shortest and safest route.
- Assist juveniles with completing necessary documents, such as medical forms required for treatment or court documents.
- Maintain proper court security coverage and prevent escape.
- Obtain and secure all necessary documentation/medical clearance paperwork needed to ensure proper admission to detention.
- Place restraining devices on juveniles for security purposes during transport and ensure a secure environment before devices are removed.
- Keep track of assigned juveniles under immediate charge through periodic head counts and record schedules, activities, incidents, and other details in a logbook to be aware of the whereabouts of juveniles in custody.
- Use appropriate techniques to calm disruptive juveniles in potentially dangerous situations and may physically restrain them to prevent endangering their health/safety or others.
- Uncover violations and protect the health, security, safety, and welfare of juveniles.
- Write comprehensive, factual incident reports and/or complete forms such as safety reports to document detailed information.
- Graduation from high school or vocational school or possession of an approved high school equivalency certificate.
- Read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties. Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred.
- United States Citizenship.
- Valid New Jersey driver’s license required to perform essential duties of the position.
- Must be available to be on-call after-hours, weekends, and holidays assigned on a rotating basis.
- Appointees will be required to successfully complete a training program approved by the Youth Justice Commission within the time period prescribed by law or the New Jersey Police Training Commission.
The standard work schedule consists of 40 hours, Monday through Friday; however, flexibility is required due to the nature of the work. Hours will vary as needed and will include mandatory overtime to complete scheduled or emergent transports.
Offers of employment are contingent upon successful completion of physical fitness testing, including drug screening.
