Purpose

The skilled laborer is responsible for performing a variety of tasks related to construction projects on the university campus. This role requires an experienced professional with a well‑rounded background in multiple aspects of construction, including framing, drywall, painting, minor electrical and plumbing, tiling, trim carpentry, masonry, concrete work, and more. The skilled laborer will work closely with other team members and contractors to ensure projects are completed on time and meet quality standards.

Job Functions
  • Framing:
    Assist with constructing and installing framing structures for buildings, walls, and other architectural features.
  • Drywall Installation:
    Measure, cut, install, and finish drywall to meet project specifications.
  • Ensure clean, smooth finishes ready for painting or further finishing.
  • Painting and Finishing:
    Prepare surfaces and apply paint, stains, or finishes on interior and exterior surfaces.
  • Ensure even coverage and high-quality finish.
  • Minor Electrical and Plumbing:
    Perform basic electrical and plumbing tasks, including installing light fixtures, switches, outlets, minor plumbing repairs, and assisting with larger electrical or plumbing projects as directed.
  • Tiling:
    Install tile in kitchens, bathrooms, and other areas, ensuring correct placement, alignment, and proper use of materials. Perform grout application and clean‑up.
  • Trim Carpentry:
    Install, repair, or replace trim, baseboards, and moldings in various areas of the building as part of finishing work.
  • Masonry:
    Assist in laying bricks, blocks, or stone for structural and decorative purposes.
  • Ensure correct alignment and mortar application.
  • Concrete Work:
    Mix, pour, and finish concrete for projects such as sidewalks, foundations, or floors. Assist in setting up forms and ensuring proper curing of concrete. General Labor and Site Support:
    Provide general labor support, including moving materials, tools, and equipment, as well as preparing work sites and cleaning up after projects.
  • Safety and Compliance:
    Follow all safety protocols and wear personal protective equipment (PPE) while working.
  • Adhere to all campus safety regulations and construction codes.
  • Collaboration:

    Work effectively with other tradespeople, contractors, and team members to complete tasks as part of larger campus projects.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent (preferred).
  • At least 3-5 years of hands‑on experience in multiple construction trades, including framing, drywall, painting, minor electrical and plumbing, tiling, trim carpentry, masonry, and concrete work.
Certifications, Licenses, Registrations
  • OSHA 10 or 30‑hour certification preferred. Other relevant certifications (e.g., in electrical or plumbing) are a plus.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities And Personal Characteristics
  • Strong proficiency in a variety of construction tasks and the use of relevant tools and machinery.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, construction plans, and technical drawings.
  • Excellent attention to detail, ensuring high-quality workmanship and adherence to safety standards.
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to work well as part of a team.
Physical Demands
  • Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in various campus locations. Ability to work in varied weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift materials (up to 50 lbs.) and stand, walk, and work for extended periods.
  • The possibility of evening and weekend hours based on project needs.
