Research/Data Analyst (Employment Statistics Supervisor)

Department of Labor, Health and Economic Development (DHEWD), State of Missouri.

Main Purpose

This position leads two employment statistics programs that produce and report key economic data for Missouri in partnership with the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The Local Area Unemployment Statistics (LAUS) program publishes monthly estimates of labor force, employment, and unemployment statistics at city, county, micropolitan, and metropolitan levels. The Current Employment Statistics (CES) program publishes monthly industry employment and wage estimates at the metropolitan and state levels.

The incumbent ensures accurate, timely, and high-quality data to support decision‑making in the state.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the LAUS and CES programs, ensuring high‑quality data and reporting that satisfies BLS performance deliverables.
  • Supervise one team member, providing hiring, workload assistance, performance management, coaching, goal‑setting, and day‑to‑day supervision.
  • Prepare and verify detailed statistical model data inputs.
  • Collaborate with partners from other states and BLS regional/national offices to ensure cross‑state data quality and troubleshoot program issues.
  • Create and review monthly and annual labor‑force and employment estimates.
  • Use BLS data and the Office of Workforce Development to produce annual Areas of Substantial Unemployment reports.
  • Apply knowledge of state and local economic trends to ensure accurate data publication.
  • Respond to data requests as needed and perform other related duties.
  • Maintain regular and reliable attendance.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of statistical methods, data collection and dissemination, sample surveys, and quantitative analytical methods.
  • Ability to use dashboards and reporting tools to measure and guide performance.
  • Knowledge of economic, education, and labor‑market information datasets, sources, and uses.
  • Strong coaching skills that foster a positive, innovative, and collaborative work environment.
  • Strategic thinking and the ability to adapt as program needs evolve.
Education and Experience

Beneficial education and/or work experience includes technical or professional experience in research, data analysis, economics, business, public administration, or a closely related field, including military service.
