Position: Technical Field Intern (Materials Technician)

This position is available in the Geotechnical Section of the Construction & Materials Division.

Why You’ll Love This Position

The technical field intern (Materials Technician) performs semi-skilled technical duties in the sampling, testing, and/or inspection of materials used in highway construction and maintenance projects. Responsibilities are performed under moderate supervision.

What You’ll Do
  • Performs laboratory testing of soils, aggregates, and rock cores; such as sample preparation, Atterberg limits, moisture content, direct shear tests, consolidation tests, standard proctor testing, unconfined compressive strength test, etc.
  • Utilizes computers, electronic systems, and testing equipment for data entry, data collection, analysis, and preparation of laboratory testing reports.
  • Performs calculations, reports test results, notifies supervisor of deviations from standards, and maintains records of testing activities.
  • May attend American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) or American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) equivalent certification programs and classes if not already certified (pending program availability).
  • Operates automated lab equipment, basic hand tools, and wet saws in a safe manner; clean lab and equipment regularly; and prioritize and track samples.
Minimum Qualifications

All you need for success:

  • Enrolled in a relevant 2-year/associate’s degree program full-time (12+ credit hours).
  • 30 credit hours completed/accepted toward current degree program. High school or other postsecondary program credits must be shown to be accepted by the current program through a degree transcript to apply.
  • Possess and maintain an overall GPA of at least 2.0 out of 4.0, or equivalent.
Special Working Conditions
  • This is a wage, non-benefits eligible position, working no more than 1,039 hours per year.
  • The typical working hours are Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
  • Job is physically demanding and requires prolonged periods of standing and frequent lifting.
  • Job requires outdoor and/or laboratory work that involves exposure to physical hazards, health and safety risks, and/or adverse or otherwise undesirable characteristics in the environment, including (but not limited to) exposure to hazardous chemicals, dust, fumes, hot ovens, power tools, and other equipment.
  • Basic math skills, consistent with high school level algebra, will be necessary to perform many of this title’s duties.
  • Job may require occasional, statewide, overnight travel.
