PURPOSE

The Academic Success Advisor supports student persistence, retention, and degree completion through proactive advising, targeted academic recovery interventions, and first-year instruction. Serving as a primary point of contact for new, first-year, and academically at-risk students, the Advisor provides holistic guidance that integrates academic planning, policy navigation, and engagement with campus resources. Through individualized advising, early alert outreach, and classroom instruction in the First-Year Experience sequence (GE 101 and GE 102), the Advisor reinforces essential success skills, including goal setting, time management, self-advocacy, and academic engagement.

The role also contributes to the university's broader retention strategy through committee service, cross-campus collaboration, and participation in special initiatives designed to strengthen institutional pathways to student success.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS First-Year Student Advising

Academic Success Advisors support new, incoming, and early-credit students (including transfer first-year students with fewer than 30 credit hours) through proactive advising, transition support, and retention-focused engagement.

Core Responsibilities
  • Conduct proactive outreach and communication with new and incoming students in-person, remotely, virtually, and by phone.
  • Communicate university policies, procedures, deadlines, and due dates in a timely manner.
  • Provide a positive, encouraging advising environment that supports student persistence and adjustment.
  • Serve as a liaison between students and campus academic and student support services.
  • Collaborate with campus departments to ensure holistic student support.
  • Assist students with goal setting, academic planning, and early academic decision‑making.
  • Build rapport with students and promote help‑seeking behaviors.
  • Help students develop classroom engagement strategies and effective learning habits.
  • Maintain advising records and document student progress.
  • Maintain confidentiality and proper documentation practices.
  • Conduct academic success workshops and programming.
Student Academic Recovery Advising (Probation & Intervention Support)

Advisors provide structured, developmental advising for students on academic probation and those requiring targeted academic recovery interventions.

Core Responsibilities
  • Provide advising and intervention support for assigned students, colleges, majors, or departments.
  • Implement early intervention strategies using the university's early alert/intervention systems.
  • Create and implement individualized academic intervention plans based on student strengths and weaknesses.
  • Support registration and advising processes for students on academic probation.
  • Conduct a minimum of three structured advising/check‑in appointments per semester with each assigned student.
  • Monitor, track, and document student academic progress.
  • Identify service gaps using best practices in retention and develop responsive programming.
  • Promote student persistence through innovative programming and cross-campus referrals.
  • Participate in retention-focused special events and initiatives.
Teaching First-Year Experience Courses (GE 101 & GE 102)

Academic Success Advisors serve as instructors in the University College First-Year Seminar sequence and are responsible for structured academic instruction, assessment, and cohort engagement.

Core Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with campus service offices to integrate institutional resources into the classroom.
  • Implement a curriculum that supports first-year student transition and belonging.
  • Develop and use course syllabi aligned with institutional guidelines.
  • Deliver organized, prepared instructional content at scheduled class times.
  • Use innovative teaching strategies and continuously improve instructional quality.
  • Maintain regular communication with students regarding academic performance and expectations.
  • Track attendance, academic progress, and submit required reports.
  • Evaluate student performance and assign grades.
  • Enforce classroom policies and maintain learning environments.
