Overview
The Maintenance Lead supervises maintenance staff, schedules repairs, and performs hands-on technical work to ensure machinery, buildings, and facilities operate safely and efficiently. They are responsible for managing preventive maintenance programs, troubleshooting complex issues, inventory control, and enforcing safety protocols. Maintenance Lead acts as a working supervisor, bridging the gap between management and front-line technicians to ensure facilities and equipment remain operational, safe, and efficient.
Responsibilities- Team Leadership: Assign daily tasks, monitor work progress, and provide on-the-job training for junior staff.
- Maintenance Operations: Performs and oversees electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and mechanical repairs.
- Preventive/Predictive Maintenance: Develops and executes schedules for machinery, equipment, and building systems.
- Troubleshooting & Repairs: Diagnoses complex equipment failures and repairs/replaces parts.
- Safety & Compliance: Ensures compliance with OSHA, lock-out/tag-out (LOTO), and environmental regulations.
- Inventory Management: Order parts, tools, and supplies while staying within the allocated maintenance budget.
- Vendor Management: Coordinates with outside contractors for specialized repairs.
- Reporting: Use a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to track work orders, labor hours, and equipment history
Skills and Qualifications
- Experience: Proven experience as a maintenance technician or lead, usually 3-5+ years, with expertise in electrical, mechanical, or HVAC systems.
- Technical
Skills:
Proficiency in using hand/power tools, reading blueprints, and understanding technical manuals. - Leadership/
Soft Skills:
Strong communication, troubleshooting, and organizational skills. - Physical Requirements: Ability to lift heavy equipment, climb ladders, and work in various conditions.
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent; technical school or certifications are preferred.
