Manager of Security Overview

The Manager of Security is responsible for the daily operations of the Security department, providing leadership and managerial direction. Responsibilities include managing and coordinating the activities of Security personnel, fiscal management of resources, disseminating inter‑ and intra‑departmental communications, reviewing and revising policies and procedures, preparing and complying with capital equipment, salary and expense/revenue budgets, and assisting the Senior Director in developing and carrying out short‑ and long‑range goals of the department.
The role assures compliance with all regulatory agency rules and requirements, performs liaison activities with other Mercy Health System departments, medical staff, and various outside organizations.
- Bachelor’s degree
- Five (5) or more years of security experience, health‑care related is preferred.
- Knowledge of The Joint Commission Hospital National Performance Goals, Physical Environment & Emergency Management chapters is preferred.
- Knowledge of NFPA Life Safety 101 and other related codes preferred.
- Minimum of Three (3) years supervisory experience required.
- Candidates with alternative educational backgrounds with more than ten (10) years of experience may be considered.
- Completion of the International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety (IAHSS) Advanced Security Officer Course or certification within 180 days of obtaining the position.

- Area of Responsibility: MHTC, Walworth, Harvard area or Freeport, Rockford and Crystal Lake area.
- Responsible for managing and planning day‑to‑day operations of the Security Department and proactively developing a security program to address ongoing healthcare security challenges.
- Developing good working relationships with area law‑enforcement agencies, Administration, Risk Management, and internal customer departments (especially clinical care teams).
- Strong internal and external communications skills. Responsible for training, skills validation, monitoring, reporting/documentation, and supervision of security officers to ensure safety risks for visitors, patients, and staff are minimized.
- Managing technology systems within security including key control, access control systems, video surveillance, and other tools used in security operations.
- Performing and directing investigations of security‑related incidents.
- Conducting intermediate and annual performance reviews for applicable security and valet partners.
- Establishing operational procedures for Security activities such as security awareness, traffic control, security of physical property, security training, active assailant response, and other related disciplines.
- Conferring with leadership representatives to formulate policies, determine program needs, and coordinate programs with physical plant and patient‑safety activities.
- Maintaining proficiency with OSHA regulations, NFPA standards, Joint Commission standards, and other regulatory agencies having jurisdiction.
- Conducting proactive and reactive security assessments and reporting findings to the Senior Director.
- Monitoring and trending reported security incidents and implementing performance‑improvement activities based on such trends.
- Participating in the facility Safety Committee and maintaining membership on other assigned committees.
- Conducting security training as requested.
- Travel within the Mercy Health System will be expected.
- Working closely with other FMES departments on a collaborative basis for consistency and teamwork to establish related tasks and duties.
