Position: R&D Chemist I

Description

SHINE Technologies is seeking an R&D Chemist I to support the development of innovative solutions for medical isotope separation and purification, used nuclear fuel recycling and tritium handling research and development. The base salary range for this position is $60,000 - $65,000 per year plus a comprehensive compensation package. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location.

The R&D Chemist Is Expected To
  • Prepare samples and solutions according to general chemical principles
  • Contribute to teams working on targeted R&D projects (including radio chemical separations)
  • Learn, operate, and troubleshoot a variety of analytical instrumentation (including ICP-MS, LSC, HPLC in order to analyze samples generated within the Chemistry department and across other SHINE divisions)
  • Perform emerging experiments as needed
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Radiochemical Separations:
    Perform liquid‑liquid and column chromatography separations to purify metal ions, specifically focusing on the recovery of actinides and fission products from complex matrices.
  • Gas Handling:
    Support experiments involving hydrogen isotope handling (e.g., tritium, deuterium), the development of materials for tritium storage and purification, and separation of Xe and Kr.
  • Analytical Instrumentation:
    Learn and operate advanced radio analytical tools, including ICP‑MS for trace metal analysis, Liquid Scintillation Counting (LSC) for beta‑emitters (like tritium), and HPLC.
  • Prototyping & Scale‑up:
    Assist in the design and operation of bench‑top and pilot‑scale systems for chemical processing and off‑gas treatment.
  • Documentation:
    Develop and modify Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for handling radioactive materials and document experimental results in high‑fidelity test plans.
Requirements
  • B.S. in chemistry, radiochemistry, or relevant scientific discipline.
  • 0-1 years of experience in a Chemistry laboratory.
  • Experience with spectroscopic or chromatographic techniques.
  • Willingness to handle radioactive materials and learn proper use of radio analytical instruments.
  • Willingness to be hands on and understand new technology.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Working Conditions And Physical Effort
  • Ability to remain in a stationary position (e.g., standing or sitting) for extended periods.
  • Ability to move within facility environments, including accessing testing areas and operating instrumentation.
  • Ability to handle standard laboratory equipment and materials weighing up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Work may occasionally take place in controlled radiation areas under supervision and within regulatory exposure limits.
  • Use of personal protective equipment (PPE), including full Tyvek suit while wearing a ventilated hood, lab coats, safety glasses, and dosimeters.
  • Work involves moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
  • Although flexible work hours may be available, shift‑work schedules may be required, and extended hours will sometimes be necessary to complete required work assignment.
  • Able to obtain confined space entry certification.
  • Exposure to arc flash and high voltage usage.
  • Participation in the site emergency plan drills.
