The City of Janesville is seeking a Civil Engineer to join our Department of Public Works, Engineering team. This position offers the opportunity to work on meaningful public improvement projects that directly impact the community; everything from streets and utilities to stormwater and transportation planning.
Under the general direction of the City Engineer, this role performs professional engineering work in the planning, design, coordination, and oversight of public infrastructure projects while ensuring compliance with applicable laws, codes, and industry standards.

Responsibilities- Prepare, review, and manage engineering plans, specifications, surveys, and bid documents for public works projects including streets, utilities, stormwater, and traffic systems
- Coordinate project design, cost estimates, bidding, construction oversight, and contract administration
- Inspect construction projects to ensure compliance with plans, specifications, and safety standards
- Conduct feasibility studies, cost analyses, and recommend alternative solutions
- Review plats, subdivision plans, easements, rights-of-way, and development-related permits
- Collaborate with City departments, consultants, contractors, developers, and regulatory agencies
- Respond to public inquiries, questions, and concerns in a professional and timely manner
- Utilize engineering software and tools for modeling, drafting, GIS analysis, and documentation
- Assist with Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) transportation planning activities, as assigned
- Bachelor’s degree from an ABET-accredited college or university in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Biological Systems Engineering, or a related field
- Minimum of six (6) months of professional engineering experience
- Valid state-issued driver’s license at time of hire
A combination of equivalent education and experience may be considered.
Preferred Qualifications- Experience with AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and ESRI GIS
- Working knowledge of civil engineering principles in a municipal setting
- Strong project management, analytical, and problem-solving skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to interpret engineering plans, specifications, and regulations
- Strong customer service orientation and ability to work with the public
- Ability to manage multiple projects and adapt to changing priorities
- Primarily office-based with occasional field work
- Monday–Friday, 40-hour schedule; occasional additional hours as needed
- This position is not classified as safety-sensitive
