Overview
Assistant Teacher
- Early Head Start in Janesville, WI. Responsible to the Site Supervisor for assisting with the integration of an educationally and socially positive classroom environment and helping each child achieve their potential while following all CAI policies, EHS performance standards, and state licensing rules. Responsibilities include integrating program objectives into a positive educational and social environment to uphold the agency’s policies, mission and values in a culturally competent manner.
- ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Include The Following)
- Carry out activities according to the lesson plans provided by EHS Teacher and as developmentally appropriate.
- Assist EHS Teacher in establishing and maintaining goals, portfolios, and assessments for all children enrolled according to the Education Policy and EHS performance standards.
- Assist in establishing and maintaining a daily schedule that follows the Education Policy and EHS performance standards.
- Provide direct care and assistance to children with basic needs including eating, dressing, and hand washing.
- Interact with children frequently while showing interest and modeling respect and affection regardless of race, gender, background, ability, culture, etc. of children or family members.
- Implement the positive guidance policy within the classroom.
- Encourage independence in children while teaching and modeling positive approaches to behaving constructively.
- Assist children in dealing with emotions, positive and negative, while expecting them to behave in developmentally appropriate ways.
- Carry out activities according to lesson plans; ensure developmentally appropriate practices.
- Assist in establishing and maintaining goals, portfolios, and assessments; follow Education Policy and EHS performance standards.
- Maintain daily schedule per policy and standards.
- Provide care and assistance to children with basic needs including eating, dressing, and hand washing.
- Interact with children with respect and modeling inclusive behavior.
- Support positive guidance and independence in children.
- Assist with emotional development and appropriate behavior management.
- Plan and set up the environment to meet Education Policy, Environmental Rating Scale requirements, and EHS performance standards.
- Maintain a pleasant, welcoming learning environment for children, families, and co-workers.
- Provide a healthy and safe environment conducive to positive learning, play, and growth.
- Establish and maintain positive working relationships with children, families, co-workers, and supervisors.
- Maintain effective communication with families, children, co-workers, and supervisors per policies and Environmental Rating Scales.
- Guide and mentor new team members, assistant teachers, substitutes, volunteers, and students; include completion of evaluations when necessary.
- Maintain a healthy and safe environment according to all safety and emergency standards, performance standards, policies, and procedures.
- Follow all relevant standards and rules (Community Action, Community Kids, Young Star, EHS performance standards, State Licensing).
- Complete required forms (USDA, attendance, Under Two Intakes, accident reports, etc.).
- Maintain an organized, clean, and sanitized environment.
- Promote healthy snack times as social learning experiences.
Note: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Qualifications- Education and Experience
- Must be 18 years of age with a High School Diploma/GED
- Plus one of the following: three ECE courses meeting Licensing Standards; or 60+ college credits including ECE coursework; or an Associate Degree in Early Childhood; or a BS in ECE/Development or related field; or a Master in EC with one year of experience preferred.
- Must annually complete 15 hours of approved continuing education.
- Language Skills
- Good communication skills; ability to present information in one-to-one and small group settings to children, families, and staff. Bilingual in English and Spanish is highly desirable.
- Mathematical Skills
- Ability to perform basic arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) with whole numbers, fractions, and percentages.
- Reasoning Ability
- Ability to follow written or oral instructions; solve problems with a few concrete variables; conduct smooth transitions; be flexible in routine tasks.
- Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
- Teaching staff authorized to drive childcare van/bus must meet driving standards and maintain passenger CDL.
- Within 3 months, obtain and maintain current infant/child CPR and AED certification from agency-approved source.
- DCF-approved training in shaken baby syndrome and SIDS.
- Mandated Reporter training within the last two years or DCF-approved equivalent.
