Job Title: SPECIAL EDUCATION BEHAVIORAL HEALTH COUNSELOR/SOCIAL WORKER
Reports To: DIRECTOR OF STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES
General Job Description:
To improve the school performance of students identified as having emotional, social or behavioral through evaluation, and provide therapeutic interventions.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide individual and group counseling to students dealing with issues such as anxiety, depression, trauma, behavioral problems, and family conflict.
- Conduct mental health screenings, risk assessments, and psychosocial evaluations.
- Develop and implement individualized educational plans and goals in collaboration with students, families, and school teams.
- Participate in Student Assistant Teams (SAT), Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), and Section 504 meetings, as appropriate.
- Collaborate with teachers, school counselors, social workers, and administrators to support student needs and coordinate interventions.
- Provide crisis intervention, safety planning, and referrals to outside mental health providers as needed.
- Maintain accurate and confidential documentation in compliance with FERPA, HIPAA, and school district policies.
- Offer education and training to staff, students, and families on behavioral health topics, self-care, and resilience strategies.
- Help support a positive school climate through trauma‑informed and restorative practices.
- Maintain confidentiality with sensitive matters.
- Be flexible and able to prioritize tasks and maintain accurate and detailed records.
- Report to work on time.
- Work independently with very little supervision.
- May be required to perform other duties/functions as assigned by your supervisor.
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Counseling, Social Work, or related field with a current New Mexico licensure certification.
- Current license or certification as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) or School Social Worker (as required by the State).
- Minimum 3 years’ experience working with Special Education students required; low incident experience preferred.
- Knowledge of/or training in the area of Applied Behavioral Analysis preferred.
- Valid Drivers’ license and Car Insurance (if traveling from site to site).
- Must have knowledge and evidence based practices relevant to behavioral interventions and differentiated instructional methodology.
- Have knowledge and use of data at classroom/grade level to make informed decisions for instruction including early intervention when necessary.
Physical Requirements:
Sitting, standing, lifting and carrying (up to 40 pounds), climbing stairs, reaching, squatting, kneeling, having full mobility of fingers/hands, and moving light furniture may be required, unless ADA accommodations have been mutually agreed on and does not create an undue hardship upon the district.
Safety and Health:
Knowledge of universal hygiene precautions.
Equipment/Material Handled:
Must know how to properly operate, or be willing to learn to operate, multi-media equipment including current technology as needed.
Must be able to work within various degrees of noise and temperature. Interruptions of work are routine. Flexibility and patience are required. Must be self‑motivated and able to complete job assignments without direct supervision. After hours work may be required. May make site or home visits as needed. May work under stressful conditions on occasion.
