Personal Care Assistant, Exceptional Children Services
General Statement of Job:
Under general supervision, provides individual assistance that allows a student to remain in school with access to the curriculum and educational environment. The employee accompanies the student for the entire school day, maintaining the safety of the student and assisting with basic human functions such as breathing, toileting, eating/feeding, and any behavioral management needs. The employee collaborates with the supervising teacher to administer and/or monitor therapy, medication, and/or special treatment required by the student.
The employee assists the student with mobility needs, including transferring to and from wheelchairs and toilets, and with any individual equipment. Personal Care Assistants may also be directed to perform secondary duties during teacher workdays or student absences. The employee may assist teachers with clerical duties as directed. Reports to a Principal and/or supervising teacher. Personnel are assigned/reassigned to school locations based on individual student needs by Exceptional Children Services.
- Accompany a student with constant observation, intervention, and assistance to remain in school and access the curriculum; assist with mobility, motor skills, behavioral management, and employ strategies to protect the student or others from injury.
- Collaborate with the supervising teacher to administer and/or monitor medication, therapy, and/or other special treatment; may include lifting mobility-impaired students for transitions.
- Responsible for daily data collection.
- Perform clerical duties as needed; maintain records of student progress; participate in required trainings; assist the classroom teacher to maintain a clean and orderly classroom environment.
- Maintain student confidentiality.
- Performs other related work as required and participates in trainings within the school’s Exceptional Children’s Department.
High School diploma and some experience working with physically and/or behaviorally disabled children; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Qualifications and Standards- Physical Requirements:
Must be able to use equipment and tools; may need to lift, carry, push, pull, toilet, transfer, diaper, and feed students. Exert up to 80 pounds of force occasionally, up to 30 pounds frequently; medium work is expected. - Data Conception:
Ability to compare and judge data, people, or things. - Interpersonal Communication:
Ability to speak and convey information; receive instructions and directions. - Language Ability:
Ability to read and prepare simple correspondence and reports using prescribed formats. - Intelligence:
Ability to apply rational systems to solve practical problems with limited standardization. - Verbal Aptitude:
Ability to record and deliver information and follow instructions; effective communication in standard English. - Numerical Aptitude:
Ability to use basic math formulas, addition, subtraction, decimals, and percentages. - Form/Spatial Aptitude:
Ability to inspect items for proper dimensions. - Motor Coordination:
Ability to coordinate hands and eyes in using office equipment. - Manual Dexterity:
Ability to operate office machines; basic eye/hand/foot coordination. - Interpersonal Temperament:
Ability to work with people under stress and adapt to stressful situations. - Physical/Hearing/Communication:
Ability to talk and hear; communicate via telephone.
Skills and Abilities
