Sanitation Crew Leader

General Definition of Work

The Sanitation Crew Leader performs intermediate semiskilled work operating a refuse collection vehicle in the collection of refuse, recyclables, appliances, yard and bulky waste; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision. Supervision is exercised over assigned crew members.

* The salary posted is the full salary range for this position. The starting salary is expected to be in the range of $48,598.90 - $63,178.57 depending on experience and education.
* Essential Functions/Typical Tasks

Driving sanitation truck and other trash collection equipment; ensuring proper completion of assigned work and adequate safety precautions; providing proper equipment maintenance.

* Operates refuse collection truck picking up refuse from houses on a prescribed route; determines if items are acceptable for pick-up.

* Operates hydraulic mechanisms for compressing and dumping refuse.

* Transports refuse to prescribed disposal areas.

* Drives and operates other equipment to collect rubbish, yard debris, furniture and appliances.

* Conducts pre-trip inspection of truck.

* Cleans refuse truck and equipment.

* Performs preventive maintenance on equipment.

* Completes post trip inspections report.

* Supervises personnel assigned to truck.

* Keeps abreast of changes in solid waste collection policies, OSHA and ANSI standards.

* Assists in the delivery of trucks to residential customers for the Dial-A-Truck program.

* Disseminates information to the general public concerning basic collection routes.

* Performs other public works duties as assigned.

* Performs related tasks as required.

Required

Education and Experience

Possession of an appropriate commercial driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina.

Minimum of 5 years of experience operating various types of solid waste collection equipment

Minimum of 5 years of experience in solid waste collection field

At least 2 years of supervisory experience

Class B CDL license

Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities

General knowledge of the operation and servicing of automotive equipment; general knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation; general knowledge of safe driving practices and occupational hazards of the work; some knowledge of computer usage; skill in the operation of automotive equipment; ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions; ability to detect signs of the mechanical failure of the automotive and packing equipment;

ability to prepare written reports; mechanical aptitude; dependability; ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with associates.
