Custodian

General Definition of Work

The City of Jacksonville is seeking applicants interested in serving to help maintain clean, safe, and sanitary conditions for various city buildings and youth centers around the City. Custodians perform responsible unskilled work in the care and cleaning of City buildings and grounds; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision.

As a Custodian, you will have the opportunity to participate in the city-wide career development plan. You will progress from a Custodian I to a Custodian II and Custodian III. Your training and certifications with the State will be provided for during your employment while you learn on the job. Essential Functions/Typical Tasks

Cleaning and maintaining buildings and facilities and performing grounds maintenance work.

* Sweeps, mops and dusts offices and buildings.

* Washes windows, walls, woodwork, bathroom fixtures; cleans window blinds.

* Vacuums and cleans carpets; removes stains.

* Changes light bulbs.

* Cleans and supplies restrooms; strips and seals floors.

* Operates light automotive equipment; runs errands; picks up parts and supplies.

* Changes air condition filters.

* Checks fire extinguishers.

* Gathers and disposes of refuse, litter and trash; mows grass.

* Helps set up building and rooms for activities and special events.

* Performs routine security tours of the building and grounds to which assigned, opens and closes building and reports unusual observations to superior.

* Performs related tasks as required.

Required

Education and Experience

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.

May require possession of an appropriate driver's license validin the State of North Carolina.

The salary posted is the full salary range for this position. The starting salary is expected to be in the range of $29,835.51- $38,786.16 depending on qualifications.

General knowledge of building cleaning practices, supplies, and equipment and ability to use them economically and efficiently; ability to understand oral and written directions; ability to read and write; physical ability to perform heavy manual work; ability to work independently; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
